You can now use DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution in any game through Borderless Gaming's cloning mode, without modifying the game or injecting DLLs. Support includes compatible NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPUs.

Version 2.0.0 also brings a redesigned app and game overlay, improved frame generation, and a new machine-learning backend for BGFX that improves support for DLSS5-NR and other future ML driven effects.

Years ago, I wanted to play Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and still use the rest of my desktop. It had no borderless fullscreen option, so I wrote Borderless Gaming.

The app grew from there. Removing borders led to more control over window sizes, positions and how games behave on your desktop. But working with more games also exposed the limits of that approach. A game can undo a resize. An older title might not offer a windowed mode at all. There's only so much you can accomplish by changing the window around it.

Cloning gives us control over the picture itself. Borderless Gaming captures the game and displays a live copy in its own window. BGFX, the engine behind that copy, can process the image before it reaches your display. That's what lets us add upscaling, frame generation and neural rendering without waiting for each game to support them.

I've put so much time into this because it expands what Borderless Gaming can do for the games you already own. With 2.0.0, I've also simplified the app around the reason many of you use it: pick your game and make it borderless.

DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution

DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is included in this release. Add it to your BGFX preset, choose your output size, and upscale the game's image to match. A 720p source can become a 1080p, 1440p or 4K output.

The game doesn't need built-in DLSS support. BGFX does the work outside the game, using just the captured image. That makes it available to games whose developers never added upscaling, including older titles that are unlikely to receive another update.

You can use SR by itself or combine it with other effects. Put it after DLSS5-NR to upscale the neural-rendered image, or pair it with BGFG for frame generation.

SR requires a supported GPU and graphics driver. Performance depends on your hardware and output resolution.

Better DLSS5-NR support, optimized for your GPU

DLSS5-NR support arrived in the last release. This update improves how it runs through BGFX's new machine-learning backend.

BGFX now prepares machine-learning effects for your hardware during installation and automatically selects compatible acceleration. The updated NR package takes advantage of this to optimize processing for supported NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPUs. You choose the look; the app handles the hardware setup.

If you installed DLSS5-NR previously, reinstall the updated package from GitHub after updating Borderless Gaming. In the effects editor, choose Install from GitHub and use the DLSS5-NR repository. Updating Borderless Gaming alone does not replace the older effect package.

For the best experience on older cards you'll likely need to cap the framerate of your game. You can use the new performance overlay to get a sense of how fast the effect is processing.

A redesigned app, with less to configure

The new Windows interface puts game selection, display controls and presets within easier reach. I've removed redundant workaround options and reduced the setup needed for everyday use.

The application also has a smaller footprint and a more responsive interface. If you're here for borderless fullscreen, the main controls get you straight to it. You can explore cloning and effects when you want more control over the result.

Smoother frame generation

BGFG creates intermediate frames to make movement look smoother. In 2.0.0, frame pacing and coordination with other effects have improved, including when you combine frame generation with upscaling.

You'll also find it now keep interface elements steady and now costs less to run. BGFX also uses GPU time more efficiently when processing effects and running them together in a preset.

A new overlay for your game

Switch presets, adjust an effect and see the result while you're playing. The new overlay brings those controls into the game, along with performance information you can pin on screen.

It also shows when an effect is being prepared and when a preset is ready, so you can tell whether a change is still underway.

Linux and Steam Deck

Linux support has received work on game detection, session connections and switching presets while a game is running.

On Steam Deck, the updated Decky plugin gives you effect controls through Steam's Quick Access menu. Game and generated frame rates are at the top, with a layout sized for the Deck and navigation designed for its controls.

You can adjust effects and follow preset-loading progress from there. You can get it from here: https://github.com/andrewmd5/decky-bgfx

Compatibility

BGProxy helps fix games that resist changes to their windows or lack modern sensibilities. There are a lot of improvements made to its internals in this release, and you can now quickly install and manage the compatibility layer from the UI. Pro-tip - if a game still doesn't behave right even with the compatibility layer, try enabling the apps profile. Sometimes being applied twice does the trick.

Windows 10 remains supported from version 2004 (build 19041) onward. Individual effects have additional GPU requirements.

If you run into problems

Please report bugs in the Steam discussions or on Discord. Include the game, your GPU, your operating system and what happened. Logs or a short recording help me track it down.

Thank you to everyone who helped test this release. If you share screenshots or clips of your setup, include the preset and GPU so other people can try it too.
