Version 64 — Magazine & Ammo Overhaul
Version 64 is now live! This is a pretty major update to how guns and ammunition work.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: OLD SAVES WILL NOT LOAD
This update changes the save format, so you’ll need to start a new game. This is not something that will happen every update.
Magazines are now real items
- Guns now reload by swapping actual magazines instead of pulling ammo directly from boxes.
- Magazines contain individual loose rounds and can be manually loaded.
- Hold Reload to choose which magazine you want to insert.
- Ammo boxes can now be opened into loose ammunition.
- Traders now sell loose rounds per round, along with separate magazines.
- Magazine swapping can be done while moving; manually loading rounds still requires you to stand still.
Looted guns now have realistic ammo
- Guns taken from enemies always have a magazine inserted with a random number of rounds remaining.
- Bodies can also contain spare magazines and loose ammo.
- Guns found in containers may be completely empty or only have a few rounds left.
- The rifle in “What’s That Noise?” is now found empty — the soldier fired it dry before dying.
Shotguns completely reworked
- Shotguns now use individual loose shells.
- Buckshot fires 8 pellets and is devastating at close range.
- Slugs fire one powerful, accurate projectile and are much stronger at range.
- Shotguns remember exactly which shells you loaded and fire them in that order.
- Right-click shells and select “Load These Next” to choose what your reload feeds first.
Ammunition recycling
A new bench recipe lets you break full stacks of ammunition back down into gunpowder + empty casings, allowing unwanted ammo to be recycled into something useful.
Storage improvements
- Fixed containers incorrectly reporting themselves as full after 20 items.
- Different storage objects can now have different capacities — lockers, for example, can hold considerably more than fridges.
This update brings ApocaShift’s weapon and ammunition system closer to the kind of hands-on ammo management found in games like Tarkov, where preparing magazines and choosing what ammunition to bring is an important part of getting ready for a raid.
