When people in the Core Worlds talk about technology, they usually imagine the latest reactor design, a new warship, or another breakthrough in artificial intelligence. In reality, most of the technologies that define our lives today were invented centuries or even millennia ago. We do not live in an age of constant revolutions, but significant discoveries are still being made.
Energy That Powers Civilizations
Any world capable of supporting large-scale industry or maintaining a space fleet relies on three key technologies: fusion power, planetary energy grids, and stellar energy collectors.
The latter have become the true foundation of the modern economy. Deploy a network of collectors in orbit, and the star itself can provide enough energy to power entire continents, orbital stations, and industrial complexes.
Materials are no less important. Modern spacecraft would be impossible without superconductors, high-strength composites, and exotic substances such as Theyar and Neutronium. The discovery of Silanite gave rise to an entire field of research. To this day, no one can fully explain all of its properties, despite the fact that millions of people use Silanite-based technologies every day.
Space Is Still Vast
Humanity has never truly conquered distance. Yes, gravitational sails make interstellar travel possible. They enabled the rise of colonies, trade routes, and the states of Epsilon. But even the most advanced sail systems cannot change one fundamental fact: space remains enormous.
Each new generation of sails makes ships faster and more efficient. Today, engineers are actively studying third-generation technologies first discovered in Frey archives and installations. So far, we understand far less about them than we would like.
For maneuvering within star systems, ships rely on plasma, ion, and gravitational drives. The latter interact directly with the curvature of space itself, though their cost severely limits widespread adoption.
Information travels faster than ships but not as fast as anyone would prefer. One of the greatest achievements of modern science is gravitational communication. Through a network of massive transmitters, information can be transmitted instantaneously across vast distances within a single star system.
The development of Aurorite transmitters reduced the size of this equipment by orders of magnitude, making instantaneous communication practical for ships and mobile platforms.
Yet this is where one of the defining technological barriers of our age remains. True faster-than-light communication between stars does not exist. Every politician, admiral, and merchant on the Frontier must live with this limitation, relying on physical data carriers and local stellar communication networks to exchange information between systems.
Intelligence as a Tool
Over the past centuries, computing technology has evolved just as dramatically as spacecraft.
Today, three fundamentally different approaches to information processing coexist. Classical digital computers keep civilization running. Quantum systems simulate planetary-scale processes. Biocomputers solve problems where logic and mathematics give way to intuition and the recognition of complex patterns. Above them all stand artificial intelligence.
The most advanced AIs have long since ceased to be mere software. Some participate in scientific research and engineering projects whose results their creators can only partially explain. This reality concerns many specialists, yet no alternative has demonstrated comparable effectiveness.
Humanity as Technology
Perhaps the most remarkable achievement of modern science is the transformation of humanity itself.
Regenerative medicine can restore organs and tissues that would have been considered permanently lost only a few centuries ago. Biomodifications help people adapt to alien worlds, extreme workloads, and prolonged space travel.
Particularly notable are DMI interfaces developed through Silanite symbionts. They allow the nervous system to interact directly with technology, turning even the most complex machines into a natural extension of the human body.
The boundary between human and tool grows less distinct with every generation. This is precisely why Project Overlord remains one of the most controversial chapters in the history of science. The attempt to create programmable human consciousness raised questions that civilization has never been able to answer definitively.
Weapons and the Limits of Progress
Military technology continues to drive a significant share of scientific advancement. Plasma weapons have long been the standard armament of most armies. Laser systems provide precision fire and missile defense. Kinetic weapons remain relevant thanks to their reliability and their ability to penetrate energy shields.
New technologies continue to emerge. Among the most anticipated are Pulsers, an experimental class of weapons that may reshape our understanding of space warfare just as profoundly as plasma weapons once did.
Yet the history of science constantly reminds us of a simple truth. Every generation of researchers dreams of technologies that will remove all limitations. But the more we learn about the universe, the more new boundaries we discover.
We learned to cross interstellar distances, yet we never defeated distance itself. We created artificial intelligence, yet we still do not fully understand its capabilities. We learned to alter the human body, yet we continue to debate where the human ends and the machine begins.
That is why Epsilon remains such a fascinating place for scientists. Most of the great discoveries have already been made. But the most important questions remain unanswered.
