What happens when you bring live art to Gamescom ?
TLTR : People stop.
They look at the painting. Then they look at the game. They understand the connection immediately, without needing a long store description.
For some, the artwork came first, and the surprise was discovering that a video game had grown out of that visual world.
For others, the game came first, and then they got to see the artistic process behind it happening live, right in front of them.
That simple setup created many conversations : How did it start? How was it made? Is everything scanned? How long have you been working on it?
And something quite beautiful happened on the booth: no one really seemed impatient. People took the time to watch. Then they took the time to play.
No merch in a place full of merch.
Just a little time, attention and wonder.
The artist was Damien Montaron, the creator of MICROMEGA. He said that painting in front of thousands of people didn’t feel like pressure. It felt like energy. Something to listen to and to improvise with.
It was unsane, but contrary to what the photo suggests, incredibly gentle.
We’d love to keep a little bit of that feeling throughout the whole life of the game.
Huge thanks to the Indie Arena Booth's crew for helping us make it happen, with boards, lights, step ladders. Because they liked the idea.
🙏 We are about to launch our Kickstarter campaign, if you want to help us bring more art, more animation to our small indie game, please hit that "follow" button!
