Hey everyone,
Today, as the solo developer of Bunny Guys!, I want to openly address a topic that has been increasingly on my mind and, to be honest, has also left me feeling uncertain: the current development of the reviews and the future of the game.
From 2023 to the big giveaway
In 2023, I released Bunny Guys!. Unfortunately, over the following three years, the game was discovered by only a small number of players. Nevertheless, Bunny Guys! had achieved something that made me incredibly happy: Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam.
To make the game more widely known, I decided to take a big step in May 2026. As part of a free giveaway promotion, I gave away Bunny Guys! to over 4 million users on Steam and more than 500,000 users on the Epic Games Store.
For me as a solo developer, this was overwhelming. Suddenly, my little project reached millions of people in a very short time, and with that attention came an enormous amount of feedback. Players shared their experiences, expressed their wishes, and pointed out problems.
I took this feedback very seriously. Still in May, I began evaluating the responses and implementing the first improvements directly. For me, the huge response was an enormous encouragement and an opportunity I absolutely wanted to make the most of. I didn't want to simply leave the game as it was, but instead continue developing it step by step.
Numerous community requests have been implemented
Since that promotion, I have made various changes and additions within just a few months, many of them based directly on your suggestions:
More checkpoints: So you can save your progress more easily and don't have to repeat huge sections every time you fall.
Additional difficulty levels: So everyone can decide for themselves what kind of challenge they want to take on.
Character customization & cosmetics: So you can customize your bunnies individually.
Steam Inventory: With collectible items that you can trade or exchange with each other.
Crossplay: So players from different platforms can compete together.
Bug fixes: Continuous bug fixes based on your reports.
Of course, I cannot fulfill every single request. But I have tried to take as many meaningful suggestions as possible into account to make the game more appealing to you.
From "Overwhelmingly Positive" to "Mostly Negative"
But while I was working intensively on these improvements, the mood began to change. To give Bunny Guys! another boost, I later offered the game at a 75% discount. By now, I am increasingly worried that this decision may have done more harm to the game than good.
The fact that the recent reviews have now reached "Mostly Negative" naturally gives me a lot to think about as a solo developer. Especially because I have implemented so many of your requests directly since May. This makes it all the more important for me now to listen carefully and understand the actual cause of this development.
Cute bunnies don't mean an easy game
One important point is the actual concept of the game. I am aware that Bunny Guys!, with its cute bunnies and colorful world, may look like a relaxing family game at first glance. But this contrast was intentional from the very beginning.
The official game description already makes this very clear:
"Climb, fall, swear – the merciless obstacle race for bunnies with nerves of steel"
And further:
"One wrong step, one jump too early, and bam, back to the beginning."
Bunny Guys! was never meant to be an ordinary, easy platformer. Difficult jumps, slipping at the last moment, or frustrating climbing sections are intentional parts of the gameplay. It's about mastering the mechanics and learning from mistakes.
I can absolutely understand how frustrating it can be after several failed attempts.
Please don't get me wrong. Everyone has the right to an honest opinion. I certainly don't want to downplay technical problems or unfair controls. If something isn't working properly on a technical level, I want to fix it. However, I also don't want to remove the challenge that makes up the core of the game.
What exactly is the problem?
Reviews that explicitly advise other players not to buy the game are particularly painful. I would incredibly much like to understand where this strong dislike comes from.
Is it due to technical problems? The controls? Or because the game is simply perceived differently despite the warnings in the description?
Without your specific feedback, it is extremely difficult for me to improve the game in a targeted way.
The next big step: A level editor?
My next major milestone is already in development, and it is also based on a major community request: A dedicated level editor with Steam Workshop support.
The idea: You build your own parkour courses, share them in the Workshop, and the community plays and rates them. I even wanted to officially include particularly well-made maps in the game later on and permanently credit their creators by name, if desired.
However, given the current mood, I am wondering whether there is still enough interest in something like this at all. Such an editor means a lot of time and work for me as a solo developer. Naturally, I want to invest that time wisely.
What happens next?
Of course, I have not given up on Bunny Guys!. The current situation naturally affects me as a solo developer, but that is exactly what motivates me to listen even more carefully. I still believe in the game and want to move it forward together with you. Since my resources are limited, I really need to understand exactly where the problems lie.
That is why I want to ask you openly today:
What exactly bothers you about Bunny Guys! right now?
Which technical problems or unfair sections are preventing you from enjoying the game?
Which changes did you like, and which ones did you not like?
And most importantly: Are you still interested in major additions such as the level editor?
My intention here is not to deflect criticism. Of course, I hope that the game will eventually return to better reviews, which would make me very happy. But what matters much more to me right now is mutual understanding.
As I said, Bunny Guys! will never be a game that appeals to everyone. But I hope that together we can find a way to improve the game without losing its unique, challenging character.
I hope you don't misunderstand this message. I simply care a great deal about this game, and I would really like to move forward together with you.
Thank you very much to everyone who supports Bunny Guys!, plays the game, and takes the time to provide constructive feedback.
