Hello Comrades
It's been a while since our last update which introduced the weather feature and our television network system. Today we are releasing the first of our very important and foundational reworks into the game, along with some highly requested voice chat features. So let's get straight into what we have been working on and why it's taken so long!
Introducing FMOD
FMOD is an audio engine used by thousands of games (both indie and AAA) which integrates into Unity and Unreal Engine. Earlier this year we decided that the build in Unity audio systems wasn’t quite cutting it and was causing multiple frustrations and problems when using looped audio. Many people have reported various audio glitches and 9 times out of 10 this was due to Unity not quite playing what we had built correctly.
So we decided to look into FMOD as a potential solution. The biggest issue here would be the time required to completely rewrite and reimplement every bit of audio, and how would FMOD work with our voice chat system. Both answers were unfortunately quite negative, but the long term gain would outweigh the few months of development time and allow Jonny (our Audio Engineer) to balance and control the audio live himself through the FMOD tools in the future while the game is running.
So here we are 3 months later ready to launch our complete rewrite of our audio implementation, along with some highly requested voice chat features.
Voice Chat Update
A few months ago we were very excited to see some of our favourite Twitch streamers Strippin (View game page) & Tomato (View game page) playing Yes Comrade. They provided invaluable feedback which we have taken on board in our upcoming development plans. One big thing they found while playing was the inability to Push to Talk, or change the volume of other players.
To be honest, while developing the game I never thought thanking someone for a subscription on a livestream would become an immersion breaking moment. So I’m happy to say that in today’s update you can turn on push to talk (V Key) in the audio settings menu.
We have also now built in a Player’s list on the escape menu so you can see who is online and also you can now locally lower their voice chat volume using the relevant sliders.
Thank you to Strippin and Tomato for their feedback and showing us this clearly important and left out feature.
If you experience any bugs that we haven’t spotted in our testing with the new audio, then please report them on our Discord!
Coming Up
For anyone on our Discord, you may have seen a post from me a few weeks ago which talked about a new development timeline and what we consider a priority this Summer. We are very much looking forward to implementing the key features we promised in our Roadmap, perhaps a bit later than planned. We will be releasing an updated Roadmap coming out in a few weeks, which instead will separate it into very clear update releases.
Steam Summer Sale
We are taking part in the Steam Summer Sale starting today with 20% off all purchases. If you have a friend you would like to play with, now is the time! Thank you as always to everyone who purchases our game.
