Greeting Carants,
Your pleas for a continuation on our Discord have been heard and we're here with a new lore post to tide you over. This time, we take a look at the Coin Guard. We’re sure you’ll recognize them well – this is the faction that Kurt, beloved by many, belongs to.
A GUILD OF MERCENARIES.
A neutral faction, The Coin Guard is a guild of mercenaries mostly hailing from the Free Cities. Operating independently, and originally functioning as a mercenary company, they grew in importance over time while cultivating a reputation for honour and military excellence.
Formed after the War of Independence of the Free Cities, many who were involved with the war were left with no skills but those of combat and weaponry. However, accustomed to a degree of hierarchy and wishing to avoid competition between former brothers-in-arms, they decided to create a guild – it's this very guild that pays their wages, trains them, and assigns them to regiments.
Today, the guild is open to anyone who wants to join, including outsiders.
OF QUESTIONABLE ACTIVITIES (SOMETIMES).
Operating barracks as well as forts, outposts, and camps throughout both Teer Fradee and Gacane for their various employers; they also maintain questionable side-activities in the cities they operate in.
The Coin Taverns, one establishment you might stumble across, are usually found in their barracks. Should you delve deeper, there’s also a dark underbelly hidden in these locations: prostitution, fight clubs, and gambling rings can often be found in their cellars.
WELL-ORGANIZED AND PREPARED.
The commander who runs the guild is often appointed for life but can be removed from office should something go array. One such commander is known as Torsten – encountered during the events of the first game, he's a man who has strayed from the guild’s traditional path of honour.
The commander is often helped by a captain superintendent for logistical matters. There are other ranks too, which are as follows: corporal sergeant, major, lieutenant, captain, lieutenant-colonel, and colonel.
The troops themselves are divided into regiments named after the colours, the nations, or factions whom they were formed for, which are then divided into companies.
In 50 years, the guild has earned a reputation - no battle is won without their soldiers, and most important figures employ them as bodyguards, which you’ll discover during your foray into the world of GreedFall.
THAT’S ALL FOR NOW.
Till, your latest companion added in Update 0.3, also hails from this faction. Perhaps, if asked, he’ll reveal more about them? Maybe you should have a chat with him when the chance arises...
As for our next, and final, lore deep dive, we’ll talk about a faction where feathery hats and dramatic door openings are favoured – that is, the Congregation of Merchants.
