I wanted to write a quick update on the Pirate Dragons playtest. First, thank you to everyone who has given my feedback.
I'm working on a few systems that I want to have in the game before starting the next playtest round.
- Factions and Faction Reputation
- Quests/Missions
- Events
I'm hoping to have them all in and working next week.
A quick synopsis of each feature.
There are 4 main factions and 3 pirate factions in the world. You will have different reputation with each. A positive reputation will mean lower prices on repairs and upgrades and a low reputation will mean higher prices. A very low reputation may even result in that faction sending ships to attack you and/or refusing to give you quests or missions. Increasing your reputation with a faction will also unlock more quests and missions with that faction.
Quests and Missions are usually given by the factions. Quests are one-offs and story driven, such as being asked to attack a specific pirate who has swindled a faction. Missions work pretty much the same as quests, but are repeatable and may include something like delivering goods from one town to another. Completing quests and missions will be one of the ways you can increase your reputation with a faction.
Events can be found in the game, usually in the overworld view. These are multiple choice situations that can lead to treasure, faction notoriety changes, other rewards, and even ambushes. Below is an example of an event.

Basically once these features are in, you'll be able to play a small sample of the game loop. The game will still feel grindy and it isn't balanced yet though. But anyone who wants to give feedback on the game will be able to play this build and have enough of an experience to get a sense of what the game will be. If I have time, I also want to hook up the save/load game system so you can progress without having to play for a long time all at once.
I'll be writing more information about these systems in the coming days. If you haven't signed up for the playtest yet now is a good time to do so! I will be inviting everyone who signs up once the build is ready, hopefully in a week or two!
I'm very excited to be able to share Pirate Dragons with all of you and I'm looking forward to hear what you think of the game!
