When we last showed Newhaven, much of our work was focused on shaping the region itself — its terrain, landmarks, outpost, and exploration spaces.
Now we’re beginning to bring some life into it.
One of our recent development focuses has been building the ambient sea-life framework for Unshallow.
Rather than having fish simply move around as background decoration, we want the creatures inhabiting Nerion to feel like they actually belong there and respond to what is happening around them.
The first species we’ve been working with now has its own ambient behavior. Fish can move naturally through designated habitats, change direction over time, navigate around parts of the environment, and react when the player gets too close.
When threatened, they will attempt to flee before eventually returning to their normal behavior once the danger has passed.
Building for More Than One Fish
The important part for us wasn’t simply getting one creature swimming.
We’ve been building the system as a reusable framework that can eventually support many different species throughout Unshallow.
Different creatures can have their own movement speeds, detection distances, habitat sizes, flee behavior, surface restrictions, and other behavioral characteristics without requiring us to rebuild the underlying system every time.
We’ve also started working on how these creatures are simulated when the player is far away. Ambient animals don’t need to continuously perform every behavior when nobody is nearby, so distant sea life can enter a reduced simulation state and become active again when the player returns.
That becomes increasingly important as Newhaven and the later regions begin filling with more wildlife.
A Small Addition That Changes the Environment
There is still plenty of tuning and expansion ahead, and this is only the beginning of the wildlife planned for Nerion.
But even these first few fish have already made a noticeable difference.
Seeing something move through the environment, react to your presence, and disappear between the terrain makes Newhaven feel much less like a static level and a little more like a place that existed before the player arrived.
And that is exactly what we want.
There is much more happening behind the scenes on Unshallow, including continued work on Newhaven, quests, exploration guidance, environments, and the systems supporting the game.
We’ll have more to share soon.
Thank you for continuing to follow the development of Unshallow.
