Hey everyone
This week I'll be releasing the first non-early access version of Overlay Studio. In the past few months, I've worked on this version whenever time permitted. It's definitely been a long time coming, but I have to say that I'm quite happy with how it turned out. You can already try out the latest version by opting into the beta.
To do this, go to your steam library. Right click on overlay studio and select properties. Once the properties window opens, navigate to betas in the sidebar. Select the option "beta - beta branch" and use the beta access code betabranchsecret to gain access. Steam should now start installing the latest beta version.
The change that you will notice first is the new UI. One of my main gripes with the old one was that the styling was all over the place. The source code was also very bloated which made it hard to easily add new features. With this version I've tried to adhere to some simple rules that should make it look nicer and easier to maintain. (There is also a dark mode now!)
Another change is the addition of browser overlays. These are actually pretty cool since they basically give you a web browser sandbox in which you can design whatever you want. The amount of web tooling available nowadays is huge. All of the existing libraries you know and love can be used within browser overlays to e.g. create cool widgets or 3d animations. If you're experienced in web development, make sure to give it a try and let me know if you're missing anything! I will be uploading instructions shortly.
Finally, I switched the backend renderer from OpenGL to DX11. There was this strange issue where Overlay Studio on some devices with integrated graphics would perform atrociously bad. After a lot of experimenting, I came to the conclusion that it would be best if I switched to DX11. Do let me know if you encounter any other issues though! I can imagine that such a large switch may introduce bugs that I haven't noticed yet haha.
