Hi everyone,
Last week was very busy in my non-game dev life, so I wasn’t able to get too much done - but I want to take a brief moment to talk about what I am planning for the art I will be doing.
One of the biggest things left before 0.8 experimental at this stage is to get a few more buildings done, at least to a placeholder level:
We need a model for the swordsman watchpost, the pistoleer watchpost, 3 new models for the barracks (one for each tier), and finally a model for the new scout’s hut. The scout’s hut, one of the barracks, and the swordsman watchpost will all be wood-tier, so they will get the most attention for now, as we have spent lots of time thinking about what we want the wood tier to look like in the future, and this will be our first opportunity to show that.
As I have mentioned before, we will be using a lot more bamboo and thatch materials in the updated wood tier to show that your settlement isn’t very well established yet. I will try to use these elements in a way that they can be easily upgraded when I can get a real artist to work on them, but I should hope that they will look fairly decent for the time being nonetheless.
Another change that I want to bring to the new models (and update the old models with, once we get to them) is to make them align better with each other and the grid of the world. Essentially, the buildings will all be multiples of a 5x5 metre tile, which means that they will neatly fit next to each other - with room for your villagers to pass them already built into the space the building takes up. That should make aligning buildings easier, while at the same time allowing us to design them in a less blocky way (ironically).
There are a couple of additional ideas on this, but considering this post is already getting lengthy, I will talk more about them next time.
Until next week!
