What type of game is Wassermann?
Wassermann will be a short and eerie adventure game (mostly a walking-sim) with some horror elements. It is set in an Alpine mountain valley and a vast cave system. The main objective in the game will be to attempt to rescue your spouse, who ventured into the cave under mysterious circumstances. The problem is that the cave happens to be the lair of the infamous Wassermann.
What or who is 'Wassermann'?
'Wassermann' is German for something like water sprite or water man. It is a common creature in folktales around Europe. In my game it is mainly inspired by Austrian folklore, though I will also take a lot of creative liberties. The Wassermann lives in all kinds of waters and it is said that it is known to abduct people.
Planned Development
As I have experienced with my previous games, game development takes up a lot of time. Like, really a lot. And everything takes more time than you assume.
Additionally, like with everyone's life, there are many things going on simultaneously. I also do university stuff, work at a job, have family/friends/a partner I'd like to spend time with, and chores I need to take care of. In order to still be able to pursue this game's development in a realistic but stress-free manner I decided on a few measures and goals:
- I aim for a release in the first half of 2024.
- I aim for a play time of about half an hour. This will hopefully result in a more compact and fun gaming experience, still offers enough value to players, and helps me keeping to scope manageable.
- I plan to upload new versions to Steam often and regularly, and to post patch notes to the game's Steam news feed. Not many will care about some patch notes from a game that isn't even released, but it just helps me a lot to stay motivated.
- I will try to work on the most important things first. The next thing I will tackle is some sort of checkpoint system, alongside a death system.
Yesterday and today I also set up all internal things and scripts I need in order to upload the game's build pretty seamlessly to Steam, and I also tried that and uploaded the first development build. This means that testers could theoretically already start playing the game. Though I have not yet given anyone access to the game on Steam, as I want to add a few more things before commencing with some tests. (It's difficult to test horror games, because many things are only scary the first time you play them.)
