We hope you’ve been having a magical experience in Affogato. As you journey through Arorua City, you’ll soon discover that it's not just your wits and decisions in the café that matter, but also on the mystical battlefield as you delve deeper into the minds of your customers. Here, your Witch cards aren't merely tools; they are your comrades in arms, ready to battle against inner demons. In this article, we’ll be taking you on a Witch Card tour as we showcase some of them, their abilities and how you can acquire them!

The Moon

First off, we have The Moon, a Witch card that draws strength as the tides of battle change. Each time an ally falls or is summoned back, it empowers The Moon with random buffs such as HP regeneration, ATK increase, or a Penta charge. This unpredictable advantage keeps your strategies flexible and your opponents guessing. You can acquire The Moon card from Mephista’s shop.

The Lovers

Next, meet The Lovers. United in adversity, this card is your sword and shield, reflecting damage dealt to them back to the enemy and ensuring that every confrontation is a double-edged clash. In addition, when fully charged, you’ll receive a The Lovers: Stealth card in your inventory which when cast, will bring your team into Stealth state for those decisive, blindsided strikes! You’ll acquire The Lovers card after defeating the Chapter 3 boss.

Judgment

Behold Judgment, the luminous avenger. Unlike other Witch card, Judgment does not charge energy through its attacks. Instead, its luminous strikes imprint a Mark of Judgment on enemies. When you stack a total of 3 marks, witness a spectacular explosion of energy, dealing massive damage to the marked enemies. You can acquire the Judgment card from Mephista’s card shop.

The Empress

The Empress is a Witch card that wields a charm like a blade, where each successful strike will provide you with a charge. When fully charged, The Empress: Charm card will be bestowed upon you, adding an edge of seduction and control to your tactical arsenal. You’ll acquire the Empress card after finishing Lindsay’s side story.

The Sun

And finally, introducing The Sun, a formidable Witch card that has one of the highest Penta summoning costs in the game. However, its unique prowess lies in a dynamic deployment cost, reducing each time with an ally’s sacrifice or strategic withdrawal. But wait - its brilliance doesn't end there! Upon its defeat or withdrawal from the battlefield, it triggers a radiant blast in the surrounding areas, leaving devastation in its wake! The Sun will be available for purchase from Mephista’s card shop after reaching a certain point in the story.

We hope that this Witch card tour has provided you with a glimpse of the distinct power that each card possesses! With over 20 unique Witch cards for you to collect and countless ways to build your very own deck, each battle invites you to an intricate dance of strategy and decision-making. Will you employ The Sun's explosive tendencies, or will you use The Empress' charm to sway the tide of battles?

As Tokyo Game Show 2023 comes to a close, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each one of you for embarking on this incredible adventure with us - the memories are nothing short of magical. Let’s dive back into those moments and revisit the event through a series of snapshots.

New Update: Patch 1.0.19

Hold onto your wands because we’ve just rolled out a new update, fresh from the opentest beta branch! The update includes new phone dialogues with some of our enchanting characters, a new difficulty option, a new level challenge mode, on top of more feature optimizations and bug fixes.

You can find the full list of updates below:

Content Updates

Game difficulty adjustment: We’ve added in a new “Normal” difficulty which will ensure a more balanced gameplay. “Normal” difficulty has been renamed to “Hard” difficulty. ”Hard” difficulty has been renamed to “Hell” difficulty.
Added a new mode for players who have completed the game to replay previous reverse tower defense levels.
New phone dialogues have been added for Aoi, Ema, and Hina, further enriching their storylines.

Optimizations

Improved the Witch Card Shop introduction: Detailed explanations of the witch cards have been added.
When interacting with possessed NPCs, players will now have the option to start the battle through a secondary confirmation button instead of jumping straight into battle.
Optimized the name of some checkpoints in certain levels.
Optimized how checkpoints record the position and order of the Witch Cards.
Increased the probability of triggering the positive effects of the Wheel of Fate. After triggering a negative effect, the next one will be a positive effect.
Optimized “The World" healing target to prioritize units with the lowest percentage of health - not the units with the lowest value of health.
The "Work Till You Die" and "Desensitization Therapy" achievements have been removed.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a potential issue in the final boss stage on Easy difficulty that could prevent the stage completion.
Fixed the issue where level 2-2 could not be cleared if the enemies in the level are silenced.
Fixed the issue where tasks from the previous week did not disappear in the second week.
Fixed the occasional disappearance of the map, backpack, and phone buttons.
Fixed a glitch in the third segment of the police side plot where making the wrong coffee could freeze the game.
Fixed the issue where the memory effects did not disappear after reading a memory.
Fixed an issue where the selection state of the first character would change when pressing 'F' to add points.
Fixed a bug where players will be able to switch to other cards during the Witch card upgrade tutorial.
Fixed some errors in conversational text and mobile phone news text.

We hope you have been having fun in Affogato! Are you ready for a magical whirlwind of updates? Based on the feedback and suggestions we've received from all of you, we’re happy to share that we have new content coupled with some feature optimizations and bug fixes!

Our cauldron of updates introduces new phone dialogues for our beloved characters, fresh difficulty options, and a level challenge mode awaiting you after you complete it game, and you can experience it all in the opentest beta branch now!

After further review and testing, we will then roll out these new updates for everyone to enjoy!
Below are the feature optimizations and bug fixes completed in the opentest beta branch:

Feature Optimizations

Game difficulty adjustment: We’ve added in a new “Normal” difficulty which will ensure a smoother gaming experience. “Normal” difficulty has been renamed to “Hard” difficulty. ”Hard” difficulty has been renamed to “Hell” difficulty,
Added a new mode for players who have completed the game to replay previous reverse tower defense levels.
New phone dialogues have been added for Aoi, Ema, and Hina, further enriching their storylines.
Improved the Witch Card Shop introduction: Detailed explanations of the witch cards have been added.
When interacting with street demons, players will now have the option to fight the demon through a secondary confirmation button instead of jumping straight into battle.
Optimized the visual effect when the Witch Card's hand cooldown is complete.
Optimized the name of some checkpoints in levels to allow the player to easily understand which checkpoint they require.
Optimized the position and order of the player’s Witch Card team at checkpoints.
Increased the probability of triggering the positive effects of the Wheel of Fate. After triggering a negative effect, the next one will definitely be a positive effect.
Remove the "Work Till You Die" and "Desensitization Therapy" achievements.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a potential issue in the final boss stage on easy difficulty that could prevent a player’s completion.
Fixed a glitch in the third segment of the police side plot where making the wrong coffee could freeze the game.
Fixed some errors in conversational text and mobile phone news text.
Fixed the issue where tasks from the previous round did not disappear in the second round.
Fixed the occasional disappearance of the map, backpack, and phone buttons.
Fixed the issue where the memory effects did not disappear after reading a memory.
Fixed an issue where the selection state of the first character would change when pressing 'F' to add points.
Players will not be able to switch to other cards during the Witch card upgrade tutorial, the only option is to upgrade the Strength card.

We trust you've been weaving spells and strategizing battles with gusto in Affogato! Few days ago, we opened up a public beta test branch, for you to experience the updates we've added. With your feedback and suggestions, we're excited to share that we are rolling out 1.0.17 version for everyone to enjoy!

New Updates

Opening the cafe during the day will add one random stat to Affogato.
Changed the number of auto-save slots to 2.
Older auto-saves will be overwritten automatically by newer ones.
Added the option to purchase Witch cards in the preparation phase before a battle.
Added a new option to reset all card levels and refund all Soul Shards in the upgrade interface.
Optimized the BGM volume during voiceover scenes.
Monsters killed on the beach stage now have markers displayed both above and below the water.
Fixed an issue where Witch cards could interact with the floor when returning the card to your hand
Enhanced the sound effect of Sera’s demon when she appears in Chapter 4.
Enhanced the sound effects for cards when it is on cooldown.
Reduced the coffee-making seasoning requirement to trigger hidden dialogues with customers.
You can now swipe on the game's mobile pages using a game controller.
Added detailed descriptions of Witch Cards in the Witch Card shop.
Added a battle cancellation option after interacting with a passerby.

Fixed a bug where the oxygen bar displayed incorrectly after accessing a memory.
Fixed an issue where some memory effects wouldn't disappear after accessing a memory.
Resolved a problem where Affogato became unresponsive after sitting on Keke’s chair.

Fixed a glitch where the player could access past dialogues from unintended interfaces
Fixed an issue where the CG animation did not play after defeating the Chapter 1 boss.
Fixed a problem where the achievement “Work till you die” was not granted when summoning the Hermit 3 times
Fixed a bug where Affogato was positioned wrongly after spending time in a shop.
Fixed a bug where incorrect text appeared when adding water to the coffee machine.
Resolved the issue of mismatched text during Natalie’s side story second segment.
Fixed the issue where items in the store would sometimes show the description of the last purchased item.
Fixed the issue of the lingering Demon effect after defeating a demonic NPC.

We hope you have been enjoying the magical adventure and exciting reverse tower defense battles in Affogato so far! Today, we’ll be talking about some of the bug fixes that we have been working on, as well as introducing a new Affogato opentest beta branch on Steam!

Affogato opentest Beta Branch

In this new beta branch, we've rolled out new experimental updates to the game based on your feedback. We encourage you to check them out, experience the improvements, and let us know what you think - your inputs will go a long way in helping us refine the enchanting world of Affogato!

Here are the steps to access the opentest beta branch:

In your Steam library, right click on Affogato, then click on the "Properties" button on the pop up menu.

In the Properties window, select "Betas" and under the “Beta Participation” dropdown menu, select “opentest” to opt in, and you are good to go!

Affogato should shortly update itself after, and the game should display as “Affogato [opentest]” in your Steam Library. That’s how you know that you have successfully opted in! If you’d like to swap back to the original game, simply go through the same steps as above and select “None”.

Opentest branch precautions:

The default branch and the opentest branch shares the same save path and we make our best to make sure the opentest branch save can be reused in the default branch. Just in case anything wrong happens, we still suggest you backup your savedata before switching to the opentest branch. The save path is: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Befun\Affogato\

Opentest branch won't update frequently, and we will eventually push the latest and the most stable version to the main game after a thorough quality assurance check. So in most cases, we still suggest you to stay in the default branch unless you do meet with certain issues or you are interested in the latest changes and want to conduct some experiments. If you want to switch from the opentest branch to the main branch, simply refer back to the method on how you opted in to the opentest branch.

Here’s a rundown of the experimental updates we’ve added:

Bug Fixes

Now let’s talk about bugs! We've identified an issue where using certain Witch cards might cause your team to get stuck in battles. If you do encounter this, simply return the card to your hand, or reload one of your previous saves to continue the battle. We are working on fixing this in subsequent updates and would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused!

In addition, here are some other bug fixes that we are working on:

Fixed a bug where the oxygen bar displayed incorrectly after accessing a memory.
Fixed an issue where some memory effects wouldn't disappear after accessing a memory.
Resolved a problem where Affogato became unresponsive after sitting on Keke’s chair.

1. Could you briefly introduce the OST of Affogato?

Kyfun: The soundtrack of Affogato is a vibrant mix of Acid Jazz, Fusion, and Funk, crafted to give the game a cool, smooth, and energetic feel. Imagine the high-speed thrills of early "Ridge Racer'' games—that’s the sensation that Fusion Jazz can bring to a game! For fans of classic Japanese anime, think of the style and spirit of shows like "R.O.D" or "Cat's Eye".

2. What kind of experience does Affogato aim to deliver to its audience through its music?

Befun Studio: We really adore the music of “Persona” series, and we hoped to steer the game in that musical direction during its production, aiming for a modern, catchy vibe. Moreover, both Kyfun and our team are fond of the jazz band T-SQUARE; and we clicked instantly. During the development, we were also inspired by a game called “Hell Taker,” whose music, combined with the characters' animations, is highly engaging. Throughout the development of Affogato, we aimed to replicate this magical experience through our own character’s animations and Kyfun’s music.

Kyfun: My main goal as a composer was to make sure the music elevates the entire gaming experience. With Affogato, the visuals and certain game settings are reminiscent of “Persona 5”. I felt that pairing this style with Fusion Jazz would capture the unique mechanics of the game. Beyond that, I wanted to create soundtracks that leave a lasting impression, so players might find themselves humming the tunes long after they’ve put the game down!

3. Did you encounter any challenges during the music production? How were they resolved?

Kyfun: The initial music compositions I produced were quite emotional and intense. However, the developers preferred a style reminiscent of Motoi Sakuraba's music. I had to revisit and adjust my initial approach, undergo a process of trial and error to refine my music and ensure that it aligned with both the game’s requirements and my personal style. Over time, I managed to strike a balance where my music compositions not only met the developers' expectations but also stayed true to my artistic vision!

4. Which piece of music is your favorite?

Befun Studio: My personal favorite is “Glorious Jubilee,” the background music for the Jubilee Arcade venue. Jubilee Arcade is modeled after a Chinese street, so in Western Fusion style, we tried to integrate some Chinese elements, utilizing traditional Chinese instruments when composing the music.

Kyfun: I love “In Your Mind” the most. It is the background music of one of the core elements of the game – the reverse tower defense battles. Given that it is likely the most frequently played track, I aimed to make it memorable and enjoyable, even after repeated listening. To achieve this, I adopted a variety of strategies in the composition, making certain sections complex and others simple and catchy, depending on the accompanying chord and bass progressions. My goal for this track is to resonate with jazz/fusion enthusiasts while being accessible and engaging to those unfamiliar with these genres.

5. Is there anything else you would like to say about the music?

Befun Studio: I hope everyone can enjoy the enchanting melodies of Affogato and that more people will come to appreciate this Fusion Jazz style!

Kyfun: Crafting the music for Affogato was a truly enjoyable journey for me! It allowed me to break free from my usual niche of classical Chinese and orchestral pieces. I genuinely hope the game and its soundtrack resonates with everyone who experiences it!

We want to start by extending our sincerest gratitude to everyone for the support that you’ve shown Affogato for our launch! Based on the response and invaluable feedback we’ve received so far, we’re excited to share that we are rolling out our first patch to implement bug fixes and optimizations!

Bug Fixes

Disabled the old demo save files to prevent the coffee machine interaction bug from occurring.
Fixed an issue where opening a coffee shop during the day might not allow players to earn money.
Fixed an occasional freeze during the Chapter 4 boss fight when a Witch card is defeated.
Fixed specific challenges/objectives in Chapter 2 that affect your Steam achievement rewards.
Fixed a display error that may occur in certain levels after entering memories during battles.
Fixed the negative health bar issue for the Chapter 3 boss on Easy difficulty.
Fixed an issue where the monster skill effects in Chapter 3 did not disappear.
Solved issues in the shop where skins might make chairs unusable.
Fixed an issue where demon effects persisted even after completing Natalie's side story.

Optimizations

Removed the 'water' ingredient during the coffee flavoring stage to make coffee crafting more intuitive.
Optimized some images during the tutorial phase.
Optimized the skipping feature of the certain tutorial sections.
Adjusted the prices of some drinks.
Optimized the character model for Natalie.
Improved the translation of certain side story texts.
Improved the taste judgment of coffee in Lindsay's side story.
