Sniffing out the the right opportunities!

Hey there folks! I’m sorry about being late in keeping you up with current CRAVE affairs. These past two months were a rather strange experience as I was leaning heavily on the business side of things. Prepping pitches for publishers, scrutinizing budget sheets, and actively wearing the skin of someone who not only knows what he is doing but also looks like he knows what he is doing. You see, there is a big difference. I consider myself as someone who’d rather have his work speak for himself. But if I’ve learned anything from all this, you are most of all pitching you, your team, and your overall ability to deliver on your game vision.

It took me a few meetings to realize this.

Honestly, with this update, I was hoping to bring you the good news. However, we still haven’t acquired funding for the full development of CRAVE. These things take time, and we’re already lighting the candle from both sides as our day job chores grind us down, while we try to work on the game during the nights.

Speaking of this, I thought I had a solid hypothesis. I’ve explained to the publishers that our demo is a result of working on the game in our free time, expecting them to imagine how awesome and amazing it would be if we could sink our teeth into it. Apart from two meetings, this came off as a red flag. Like we’re not even fully committed to the project. I was baffled. Yet, I realized that there is some truth to it. So I’ve decided to quit my current day job. In one month I will be fully focusing on CRAVE.

No pressure.

Nevertheless, I try to look at these situations as necessary prep work which allows me to wear the business skin more comfortably. By this I mean, talk confidently about our game, our team, and me myself being in the game industry for 15 years. I’m sure we’d be able to sniff out a proper deal that would allow us to make the game we want. And hopefully in a comforting manner. Hopefully next update I can come up with such news.

I'll leave the room on a nice note. I'm adding a few photos from the teambuilding we had last month in the beautiful hill area around Czech Pernštejn castle. We had everything, a dog, two kids, super solid folks, let me tell you. I'm just really looking forward to working with these amazing people on a more regular basis as we secure the funding for the project. One day!

First public demo!

~~Dobro jutro~~, I mean hello friends!. Last week I got the chance to attend one of the, if not my most favorite game events out there. Situated in Dubrovnik's coastal area, Reboot's atmosphere and vibes are borderline amazing. I'd also like to give a shoutout to the organizers, as I have at least half an idea of how complex and difficult is to pull off an event of such magnitude. A very special mention goes to Leo Tot who took very good care of the indie developers. And even more special thanks goes to Slovak Games Developers Association, and Slovak Art Council for allowing us to attend.

Indie Expo

We presented our demo for the first time! That's right, a small playable portion of CRAVE was playable at the event's indie zone. I felt that the game resonated very well with people, lots of hands were circling around our table, trying to play the build. I was very happy with how people reacted to the overall feel of controls and the fluidity of the main character animations.

More importantly, even mostly without the audio, and despite some janky parts of the build, almost everyone got to the end of it. Immersion-wise, the player's curiosity of what's behind the next screen, or this wall, or up above this platform was mesmerizing to watch.

The biggest takeaways however are the ones we have to heavily focus on. I had the pleasure to write down several lines of feedback from other developers in terms of pacing, level design, tutorilization of mechanics, and much more. Improving on these fronts along additional layers of polish to combat is our main mission right now , as we move forward.

A Demo?!

Yes. If you're on our Discord server, you've heard me talking about a playable demo. If you're not there, then hey, please accept my invitation again.
After we polish the current build and implement all the feedback I'd like to put out the playable build to anyone who's on our Discord. Perhaps with an itch.io page? Not sure how and when, but that's the idea at the moment.

A business?!

Of course, I almost forgot. I also talked to some people who were interested in doing business at Reboot with us. We exchanged emails and see if we can find a mutual agreement on what such business should bear fruit to. I'm actually planning to do the same at the Krakow Digital Dragons event, later in May. We'll see how it goes.

That's about it folks! It's less about words than doing actual work on the game, so take care and we'll talk again after the next note-worthy milestone.
