The game's soundtrack is now available on the Steam page for those of you who have requested it. It contains both released and unrealeased tracks that were made during the course of Early Access. In total there are 53 tracks running for almost 1 hour and 40 minutes, so there's quite a bit in there. The tracks were made during Early Access, so the tools/gear/instruments used have been upgraded over time, so there may be some differences between tracks. But it's Penguin Heist.

Hey, everyone! We've dug deeper into the issues with the Linux version of the game, and have found that OpenGL can be incompatible at times. Instead of falling back to Vulkan, it continues to run even though it doesn't work. Now we're forcing Vulkan only, and removed OpenGL support altogether, since it's not compatible with a lot of newer rendering features within Unity.
This means that the game should be working for everyone on Linux now, given that you've installed your drivers and have Vulkan support, which is standard unless you have a very specific setup.
Additions and Fixes
Added color coding to stores to order and show items by status
Forced Vulkan graphics on Linux because of incompatibilities with OpenGL that caused scenes to become invisible
Added filter to only see open server (not password protected)

We've had some negative reviews regarding performance/optimization (but no bug reports, which doesn't help at all), so we've decided to go back to DirectX 12 now that it's more stable and see if it works. We switched to DirectX 11 a while back after dealing with some terrible bugs, but it looks like we have to switch back.
If you happen to experience bad performance, please make a bug report, even if it's just a comment. We've tried the game on all types of hardware, from brand new to 10 year old potatoes, and it works fine, so we would really like to know what is going on.
Anyhow, here's the list of fixes!
Switched to DirectX 12 with DirectX 11 as fallback for old hardware

Finally, after all these years we're releasing Penguin Heist. We've had to deal with terrible bugs, reworking large parts of the game, and ripping our hair out at the most stupid issues... but we're finally done.
What will happen to Penguin Heist now? We will fix any significant bugs for a while after release, then we'll continue on one of other projects lined up for the future. We've already been working on other things during the development of Penguin Heist, so it won't be long until we're releasing new things.
It's been a pain and a pleasure. All your nice words and playthroughs filled with laughter have all made the hair-ripping bug hunting and long work days much more bearable. The full release notes will be available on launch day.

We've been releasing some patches for the game before the big update, that will mark the end of Early Access. A lot of things have been improved, and soon we'll bring full controller support along with full Steam Deck compatibility. All of this is done in advance in small updates so we can be sure it will work on launch day.
Additions and Major Improvements
New non-directional lightmapping and optimized packing to save memory (expensive these days) while looking pretty much the same. Also increased sample counts for higher quality.
Better lightmap filters and compression to get rid of artifacts and seams.
Pre-generated item icons that look better and make things run faster.
New fog that blends with the outlines
Fixes
Fixed fog not being visible.
Fixed tutorial not being completable.
Fixed slide visuals
Fixing housing mode and property spawners
Fixed some random floating particles
Fixed some weapon visuals that had disappeared
Fixed a ton of tiny other things
We'll be back soon with more updates, and soon enough the big update will arrive. Until then. we will have to noot on.

This is a preview patch of the next update, featuring a new networking system. This mainly changes how data is sent and processed. There's universal way of doing this, it all depends on the type of game, how fast things happen, and if you want to have reliable results (like for e-sports). We wanted to push this out before anything else, since there have been some connection issues.
Why another networking system? Unity and networking solutions evolve all the time and so does our knowledge of networking, and we want to do the best we can. We've found a networking solution that makes things much smoother and uses around a tenth of the data as before.
Apart from that, the two final levels are almost done along with the full soundtrack. These will be released soon, marking the end of Early Access.

Fellow nooters!
The latest big update is here, meaning we're soon done with Early Access. It has taken a lot of time, but we felt it was necessary to get it right. Now we have the best and latest in networking, the penguin have been re-rigged, all procedural animations have been redone, and the UI has been remade as well, just to name a few. The game has been plauged by jank for quite some time, and this has finally been resolved. There's still some jank, but it won't ruin every playthrough like it sometimes did before.
One of the best things about this is that we can add pretty much any gamemode without worrying about how much it will break, as well as more advanced features, vehicles, you name it. We could have chosen to just release as is, but we just couldn't do it.
What's left now? The soundtrack and new sound effects are around the corner. Then we'll improve and add more vehicles to all the maps. Finally, we will release the final two story heists and perks. That will be it for Early Access.
Additions and Changes
Completely redone all networking
Remade penguin animations
New and improved UI (that scales properly with most resolutions)
Reworked all interactables (buttons, vehicles, etc.)
Upgraded to Unity 6 with all rendering improvements
Optimized rendering and lighting
Optimized almost the whole codebase to make everything run as fast as it can
New water shaders
New explosion shaders
Fixes
Fixed all the UI problems we had before with misalignments, messed up scaling, and interactions not working
Fixed the graphics menu that was previously broken
Tweaked audio streaming to reduce glitches and stutters when different sounds play
Fixed UI scaling
Fixed UI scaling when switching between resolutions
We will return soon with news and more updates for the game.

We're a few days away from release of the latest update, and we'd like to check with you before release so that everything is in order. If you feel interested, head on over to the testing branch. You find it by right clicking on the game in your Steam Library, going into properties, and then betas. In the drop-down you select "testing branch".
This update is running on completely different systems, so all networking is new and we want to see that there are no weird issues popping up for anyone. If everything looks good by the weekend, we'll release the update on the main branch along with the annoucement.

It's been a while since we've updated the game, and there's a good reason for that. Penguin Heist started out small, but eventually grew in size, complexity, and popularity. This means that we've been using some basic, old, and outdated systems that have gotten worse over time.
We've decided to update Penguin Heist to the latest version of Unity and use a more modern networking system, since the old one was already becoming obsolete when the game was released in Early Access. Along with this we're optimizing all the models to remove any light artifacts and leaking. Ligthing and rendering is redone with the new features introduced in Unity 6, so the game will run so much faster than before. These are just some of the things we're doing to get the game ready for the future.
All of this has taken some extra time, but we felt that it was necessary in order for the game to have a future. There have also been several bugs in Unity where we've had to go back and forth with their support team to find a solution. If we would have sticked with the old stuff, we'd just add to the mess and the game would degrade in performance and quality over time. We want the the game to be worthy of a full release without all of the issues that have plagued the game for too long.
The positive thing is that Penguin Heist will finally be better in every aspect than before, and we have the possibility to expand the game in the future. There will be an update out soon with all of this, along with the updated soundtrack and new audio effects. Then we've just got to fix the UI and the final levels and the game is ready for release.

Wondered where we've been? We'll the answer is Detective Penguin! A spin-off based in the world of the Penguin Saga, which has gained some popularity on social media. We decided to make this game to give something to the fans who have been watching all the Penguin Saga videos.
Detective Penguin is a story-based, singleplayer, spin-off of Penguin Heist. The game is set in Penguin Village that you already know very well, but this time with a lot of improvements and new areas to facilitate the new story. Your task is to use your wits and flippers to go from rookie to professional in a series of Penguin Village mysteries.
Great news for Penguin Heist too! The new Penguin Village and all improvements that have been made to the core systems will be implemented in Penguin Heist, and you will soon see an update containing all these goodies. We will make a post later to talk about all of this and what this will mean for the future of the Penguin Universe.
We hope you will enjoy this detour into the mysteries of Penguin Village!

You may have noticed some connection issues after the sale started, and this was to be due to a spike in concurrent players. It's the first time it has failed just because of that, so we were caught a bit off guard. We've just modified the settings and done a reset of the hosting system and server, so it should work again.
We hope you can enjoy Penguin Heist to the fullest now!

We've been pushing out some patches to fix some issues related to multiplayer synching and some graphical issues. Everything should be working now, so we're focusing again on finishing up the soundtrack.
If you're running the game on a Mac with Apple Silicon (the M-series processors), the game will run slower and the time of day will be wrong. We've almost solved this, so keep an eye out and we'll have it fixed soon.
Fixes
Fixed outline smoothing - the lines are less jagged and the general intensity is more balanced
Fixed switches not working for clients in multiplayer
Fixed interactables not working after being downed

Hey everyone!
As we're entering the final stages of Early Access, we've made a lot of performance enhancements and changes to several shaders and just general rendering overhauls. We felt it was necessary as several of you have been experiencing lag on some levels and the whole experience wasn't really consistent.
We're in the middle of the Soundtrack Update, and we already have over 1 hour of music for the game, but we're aiming for even more than that. That's why we're choosing to release this performance update already now, so you can play around with less lag and higher FPS - as well as better outlines.
New Features and Major Changes
Overhauled the rendering system and shaders to increase performance
Optimized level geometry (FPS more than doubled in several levels)
New outlines that are faster and look better
New music player that switches between calm, area, combat, and boss music smoothly depending on the context
Removed terrain foliage in favor of prefab foliage, which is what Goldflipper Base and onward has been using
Fixes
Fixed (most) missing materials found in several levels
Fixed tree leaves textures that weren't compatible with the outlines effect
Fixed terrain textures on all levels to ensure smooth transitions
Fixed uneven/impassable terrain in important areas of levels
Fixed floating trees and bushes
We'll be back soon with the Soundtrack Update, so stay tuned! Don't worry if we've been on the silent side here, we're just busy working on the final features, chasing bugs, and just trying to polish everything up. Hope you're all still enjoying the game, and that you'll join us for the final sprint towards full release :)

We've just uploaded a small patch that should address the performance and connection issues you have been experiencing after the Big Heist Update. A preview of the new Penguin Village is also part of the update, and it will be filled up with more content and mini games for the soundtrack/sound effect update.
Don't worry if we're slow to respond, we're taking some time off to rest and do some planning before getting back to work on the final updates.
