Hello,
DemonCrawl v2.6.0 is now available on the Windows stable branch.
This update introduces special Hero Trial loadouts, 3 new items, 3 new boss mods, and the Kinetic stage mod.
We also overhauled our compilation processes - this patch serves as a test of the new tooling, so let us know if you encounter any problems in game.
Mac and Linux builds are expected to follow within 72 hours.
Full patch notes are below. Thank you.
Hero Trial Loadouts
The daily Hero Trial now has a small chance to apply a special, hand-crafted item + mastery loadout. There are around 50 of these in the pool; some are good, some are bad, some are memes. They each try to follow a specific theme or idea.
You can submit ideas for new Hero Trial loadouts at the DemonCrawl Discord server. If we accept your idea, your user and loadout name will show up in the Hero Trial tooltip as credit.
Roadmap
We are working on a large content patch, as well as the Halloween and Christmas events. This will keep us busy for a while, but we will try to sprinkle in bug fixes and small updates when time permits. More exciting stuff to come!
New Features
Hero Trials can now feature custom item and mastery loadouts
New magic item: Price Gun - "[80 Mana] Reduce the price of target stranger by half."
New passive item: Clapperboard - "When you open half of all empty cells, trigger items that would trigger when you enter or begin a stage."
New passive item: Rat King - "The only omen you can find is Dead Rodent. Each Dead Rodent has a 20% chance to kill an attacking monster before you can take damage."
New stage mod: Kinetic - "When the stage timer reaches the max stage power in minutes, double the max stage power."
New boss mod: Impenetrable - "You cannot target cells in the same quadrant as the boss."
New boss mod: Siphoning - "You lose mana opening cells in the same quadrant as the boss."
New boss mod: Bloodthirsty - "After movement, kill a nearby visible living object and spawn a Dark Heart in its place."

Hello,
DemonCrawl v2.4.0 is now available on the Windows stable branch.
This update features the long-awaited Arena Season 2, finally elevating the gamemode out of Beta. It includes 5 new homelands, 4 new Arena-only stage mods, the stats panel, bot overhaul, new cosmetics, and tons of fixes specific to Arena.
We preserved the Season 1 player ratings and you can now filter the leaderboards by season. Everyone starts fresh again at 500 MMR.
More details below. Full patch notes are available at the bottom of the post.
Mac and Linux builds expected to follow within 72 hours.
Thank you and have a great day.
π New Rewards
Climb the ladder and unlock five new avatars: FISTICUFFER, BLOBETTE, RON JAMBO, SHROOMCASTER, and LAST LIVING SOUL.
You will need to meet both thresholds of minimum wins and minimum rating to earn each reward.
Additionally, if you achieve a Legendary rating of 2000, you can find Season 1 avatars in Arena Prizeboxes, as well as 3 new avatars that are exclusive to Legendary.
π€ Better Bots
We want Arena to feel alive and available no matter what time of day or region you queue from. To that end, we spent some time making sure the bots resemble human opponents in new and hopefully interesting ways.
For example, bots now spawn with various "personality traits" that influence their playstyle and social etiquette. A chatty bot will use emoji more often. A frugal bot will be less likely to spend coins on frivolous upgrades. A desperate bot who suspects death awaits him on the next round may abandon his own personality in order maximize his odds of survival.
MMR will also impact personality rolls. Case in point: a highly-skilled bot will often roll higher on the "risk aversion" trait, leading to strategically superior choices such as skipping chests when inventory is deemed "good enough" (avoiding risk of acquiring an omen.) What a smart robot.
By associating MMR with personality, we can shape the difficulty curve in an "organic" way. Arena bots don't cheat or rely on rubberbanding mechanics - they just get better at using the tools that are available to them.
We will monitor the balance and adjust the trait algorithms in case any MMR bracket feels too easy or unfair. We also have a few more traits planned, but we want to see how bots perform before making their behavior more complex.
π Stats Screen
You can finally review your Arena stats in detail.
From this panel, you can see placement information and metadata about your recent games (e.g. MMR change, selected Mastery, selected Homeland.)
There are also tabs for Seasonal Records and Trivia, the latter of which contains entries like Max Damage Dealt, Favorite Homeland, Longest Game, and so on.
Additionally, this panel displays your current league. If you click on the helmet icon, you can pull up the seasonal rewards.
π Season 1 Champions
Congratulations to the following players for climbing to the top of the Arena leaderboards during our slightly-overlong first season:
You da real MVPs!
New Features
Arena Season 2 begins!
Added 5 new seasonal Arena avatars to unlock
Performed MMR reset and allow filtering of Arena leaderboards by season
Players who reach legendary (2000 MMR) can still find Season 1 avatars in Arena Prizeboxes
Added 3 new legendary-only avatars in Arena Prizeboxes
Added Arena Stats screen

Hello,
DemonCrawl v2.2.0 is now available on the Windows stable branch.
This patch introduces 2 new masteries, 3 new stage mods, 16 new items, an expanded Hero Trial effect pool, and numerous changes based on player feedback.
We have also prepped the game for our upcoming Easter event, which runs between April 1st and April 15th - stay tuned for more information on that.
Mac and Linux builds expected to follow within 72 hours.
New Masteries
The core design of this mastery was submitted to us by player LarnoWheels on our Discord server. Here's how they described it:
"I'm a sucker for things that interact with chance-based effects (i play a lotta roguelikes hehe) so i had an idea to mix together two stats that are chance-based into the same mastery. It's probably not a perfectly balanced concept but i like the idea of a Juggler/Jester-based class.
Juggler is a mastery focused around scaling evasion and/or powerchording chances to increase their survivability and offensiveness."
With 40 masteries in DemonCrawl, we are always looking for ideas that occupy new design space - and Juggler definitely checks that box. Managing two diametrically-opposed stats is an interesting playstyle and a welcome addition to the game.
Additional Juggler-related art was submitted by player Evermore. Thank you both!
We wanted to implement the Puppeteer mastery all the way back in v1.63, when Doll items were first introduced. But it needed more time to cook. Almost six years later, we're finally happy with its direction:
Puppeteer accumulates Doll items as you play stages.
You can summon your Dolls as temporary strong familiars for a price.
You can activate any other mastery ability if you have the related Doll for it.
As such, Puppeteer is a sort of "wildcard mastery" that should perform well in the hands of those who have a strong knowledgebase of masteries in general.
16 New Items
After implementing Juggler, we realized that Evasion had surprisingly little support in the item pool. So we're addressing that with new additions like the Decoy Log:
Dedicated Evasion builds can lean into the "double-dip" effect on their evasion, while other builds won't mind picking up a Decoy Log simply for its 1-in-4 chance to dodge any attack.
We also added an expensive new legendary item for "infinite enthusiasts" (if you know you know):
This can undoubtedly enable some absurd comps--possibly too absurd--but we're excited to see what creative uses you can find for it.
Full patch notes are below.

Hello,
DemonCrawl v2.1.0 is now available on the Windows stable branch.
This patch extends modding support to special stage backgrounds, music outside of stages, and language files. Additionally, you can now group your modded files into a "mod pack" - please check `steamapps/common/DemonCrawl/docs/stage_skin_mods.md` for comprehensive documentation.
Note that DemonCrawl's modding capabilities are still in the experimental stage, so things like filepaths and naming conventions may change from version to version. Also, the runtime's audio systems are particularly delicate, so let us know if you encounter any sound-related problems in this version.
In the future, we would like to extend modding support to most aspects of the game, but right now we're concentrating on stability - we set up a new bug tracker on Discord and have already deployed a few hotfixes for issues players have brought to our attention.
Quick Q&A:
- Mac and Linux builds when?
Probably in 3-5 days. It takes a relatively long time to compile DemonCrawl on these platforms as compared to Windows, so we want to make sure any significant bugs are squashed first.
- Mobile when?
No firm ETA, but we are exploring alternative distribution platforms and monetization models in order to avoid the difficulties we faced when DemonCrawl was last on mobile. Android is likely to return before iOS.
- Option of using original stage skins?
Yes, this has been requested a few times and it is high on our to-do list - the "mod pack" feature in v2.1.0 brings us one step closer to making it possible. We will probably deliver the original skins in the form of a first-party mod. We're still working on the logistics for this.
Full patch notes below. Thank you.

Hi folks,
We have deployed the long-awaited DemonCrawl v2.0.0 on the Windows stable branch!
This update includes 52 new items, 3 new masteries, a new stranger, a landmark, a special stage, 7 new stage mods, numerous balance changes, and many visual/system upgrades.
Note:We are monitoring DemonCrawl's online features such as leaderboards and Arena Mode to ensure full compatibility with the update. These features may be intermittently unavailable over the next few days. Thank you for understanding.
Mac and Linux builds will follow once we are confident that the game is free of any major bugs.
Let's check out some of the highlights below (full patch notes are at the bottom):
---
In terms of mechanics, the Jock is one of our favorite additions to DemonCrawl! He will wander around the board for free, pushing visible objects out of the way. This already makes him somewhat useful, but should you decide to pay him, he will launch himself in a direction (turning into a projectile) and destroy anything in his path - including hidden monsters! Just keep in mind that the Jock projectile won't wrap the screen or return to his stranger state, so you have to choose the right moment for his launch.
The Honeypot is less flashy but still useful: it pulls in a number of objects, prioritizing those closest to it. Build up the charge counter and try to "dislodge" as many hidden monsters as possible. It's particularly strong when combined with some of the new items in v2. Speaking of which:
50+ New Items
We won't spoil all the surprises, but there's a pretty good spread between support for old archetypes and items that aim to establish new ones. For example, if you find the "Wasp Nest," you can turn your Honeypots into something of a win condition:
Oh, there are also a couple of new Divine items... but it's more fun when you guys figure those out on your own. π
New Masteries
Springtime is almost here, and it definitely inspired these new DemonCrawl masteries.
The Gardener mastery acquires copies of the new Hungry Seed item at the start of each stage. You can plant seeds in targeted cells and benefit from creating "chains" of Hungry Plants. Notably, we also added "solve x cells" as a possible reward type for the Hungry Plant - very useful for Gardener.
The Beekeeper creates targeted Honeypots and charges them faster. This mastery's playstyle is straightforward but fairly unique, which is a design I often strive for.
If you're the type of player who wants to turn the game on its head (we're looking at you, Marksman enthusiasts), you might enjoy the new Monk mastery. The Monk is hard-locked to 1 slot, and it starts with the "Transcendence" item, converting all heart drops into souls. Monk can't pick up coins or diamonds, but all ground loot is transformed into damage mitigation. Also, the Tier 3 ability frees up your one and only item slot, in case you want to swap to something other than Transcendence. Yeah, it's a weird one.
New Special Stage: The Bank
This is an exciting one. The Bank lets you deposit up to 3 items (including omens) and accrue coins over time. Like the Smithy, the Bank remains open even after you leave. It permanently closes only when you decide to withdraw your interest.
Endless Multiverse was updated to guarantee 1 Bank per dimension, and your items will persist between dimensions. So basically, this is the Dimensional Vault on steroids.
New Visuals and Music
Some of DemonCrawl's visuals haven't changed since launch. In fact, some of the backgrounds were created almost 15 years ago when I had no idea if the game would even resonate with anyone. So for v2, we wanted to take a stab at improving DemonCrawl's overall presentation:
Stage background color count increased from ~10 to 16, re-exported from the original high-res graphics. This alone makes the game look a lot nicer.
Re-worked approach to dithering. More consistent, more "pixel art-y," less noisy.
Recreated every single Mastery sprite in a consistent style. Someone once joked that the game had about 6 different art styles for Masteries, and it stuck with me because it was so true. So I remade them from scratch; they follow the same color palette and style as most of the game's avatars now.
Wrote an algorithm to harmonize stage cell graphics with the background; I used to do this by "feeling" but it caused inconsistencies in contrast levels, color counts, etc. The algorithm we're using now is a work-in-progress, but it's a step in the right direction.
Plus new holographs! Who doesn't love new holographs?
Oh, you can also make your own stage skins now. Check the game's `docs` folder for more information. So you can make your own "Quest 6" if the wait has been absolutely killing you. π
There are also a few new music tracks. In particular, we wanted to swap out the music for Tribe and Bloodway because those tracks had unusual licenses and would often get flagged on places like YouTube and Twitch. As far as we know, the rest of DemonCrawl's soundtrack should be "stream-friendly."
We could go on for a while, discussing the finer points of the new Zombie stage mod, or how liberating it feels to increase DemonCrawl's Max Framerate to 500. But we'll let the patch notes speak for themselves.
On a personal note: Thank you for all of your support over the years. I never imagined DemonCrawl would have appealed to so many people - it was and continues to be an incredible project to work on. It might interest you to know that v2.0.0 only represents about half of the DemonCrawl-related things I was working on in the last few years. I had to cut the other half from this release because, let's be honest, this patch is already enormous and I think it's important we "battle test" some of these changes before moving on to... more exciting things. But I've said too much already.
Enjoy the patch notes.

Exciting news!
After resolving a number of technical issues with DemonCrawl, the game is once again available for purchase on Steam. Thank you to Valve for their assistance in these matters!
The latest version 1.97h is now available on all desktop platforms: Windows, Linux, and macOS.
To celebrate, we are offering a 50% discount for DemonCrawl and its DLC items between February 17th and the 24th.
Mobile remains on hiatus as we explore alternative distribution platforms. Android is likely to return before iOS, but we don't have a timeframe for either of these platforms as of yet.
A running list of fixes between versions 1.97c - 1.97h is provided below. About half of these issues were related to the recent runtime upgrade, while the other half had been affecting the game much longer. We are continuing to monitor our Discord server for bug reports.

Hello,
We have deployed a small patch on the Windows stable branch to address a few issues, mainly related to the 1.97 runtime upgrade.
Regarding DemonCrawl store availability: We have an open support ticket with Valve asking if it's possible to restore DemonCrawl to a purchase-able state on Steam (we missed our deadline for fixing the Wi-Fi related crashes - this was our fault, not Valve's), but we cannot make any promises/provide an ETA at this time. We will post a follow-up announcement once we know more. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Hello,
We have deployed a patch for DemonCrawl on the Windows stable branch.
β οΈ Context surrounding v1.96 crash: we determined that DemonCrawl would not launch when the device was connected via wi-fi due to a very old GameMaker runtime. After updating our tooling, this issue appears to be resolved in v1.97; we tested this new version on two separate Windows 11 devices--one connected via ethernet and the other via wi-fi--both of which worked fine.
No ETA yet for other platforms as we're looking for player feedback regarding client stability. However, we're trying some server-side changes that may allow 1.96 to run on Mac and Linux - feedback would be appreciated on this as well.
Note that 32-bit support has been retired as it's no longer available in GameMaker.
Thank you and have a nice day!

Hi folks, We just released a new version of DemonCrawl! v1.95 focuses on balance changes and stability. Perhaps the most significant change is a buff to all Mastery Dolls. With a pricetag of 30 coins, we found that most Dolls were not paying off as quickly as we would have liked.
Hi folks,
We just released a new version of DemonCrawl! v1.95 focuses on balance changes and stability.
Perhaps the most significant change is a buff to all Mastery Dolls. With a pricetag of 30 coins, we found that most Dolls were not paying off as quickly as we would have liked. Now, these items will activate at the start of every stage, and their effects scale based on your current number of mastery charges as opposed to your max charge count.
This should create some interesting opportunities where you have to decide between keeping your charges for empowered Doll effects, or spending them on a clutch ultimate ability.
Additionally, v1.95 allows us to start and end holiday events without needing to push a client update. This change was motivated by a recent hardware failure that caused the Easter event to last a lot longer than intended.
Here is the new schedule for DemonCrawl holidays going forward:
Easter: In real life, this holiday can take place anywhere between March to May, depending on the year. The in-game event will take place on either the first two or last two weeks of the month of Easter.
Summer: July 1st - July 14th
Halloween: October 15th - October 31st
Birthday: November 1st - November 7th
Christmas: December 15th - December 31st
Finally, we rewrote the borderless windowed implemention using native GameMaker functions, which should fix an issue with the taskbar appearing in front of the game on some operating systems.
Full patch notes are below. Mac and Linux builds are expected to follow in 24 hours. Enjoy!
New Features
New passive item: Varnish - "Favor all armor items. Whenever you equip armor, fortify it by 3."
New passive item: Whittling Knife - "Favor all Doll items. Whenever you gain a Doll, gain a mastery charge."
New passive item: Birthright - "Gain a random favored item at the start of each stage. You are even more likely to find favored items."
Quality of Life
Added dictionary definition for "evasion"
Replaced hacky Borderless Windowed method in favor of native GameMaker functions
Special Events can now be applied without requiring a client patch
Updated GameMaker runtime to the latest version
Balance Changes
Mastery Dolls buffed: all Mastery Dolls now activate at the start of each stage, in addition to whenever you activate your mastery
Related to the above change, Dolls now consider your current number of mastery charges instead of max mastery charges
Altar of Blood buffed: "Automatically discharges whenever you take less damage than the max stage power. The max stage power becomes the amount of damage taken."
Apple Bonsai buffed: status duration reduced from 40 turns to 10 turns
Grappling Hook buffed: "Reveal the corner cells."
Mud buffed: "For the next 100 turns, gain a Minion whenever you use a magic item."
Divine Mud reworked: "For the next 500 turns, gain a Minion whenever you use a magic item. The next time this activates, get an additional Minion."
Scrap Hopper buffed: "Destroy target chest. The next time you open a chest, gain souls equal to your number of Scrap Hopper status effects."
Horoscope price reduced from 10 to 7 coins
The Gambler now has a several-turn "buffer" when he spawns to prevent him from immediately losing coins
Guild cost of Scientist increased slightly
Negative evasion now gives monsters a chance to strike repeatedly
