To a cacophony of welcoming cries and shouts, the survey ship pulled into the harbor. Before the crew had even thrown the mooring lines to land, the drunkard captain plunged into the water and dragged himself onto the shore. Tossing his hard-won charts to the ground, he pushed his way through the crowds and made a beeline for the nearest pub, from which he did not emerge for three nights and three days. The people’s joy at the captain’s return is now intermingling with concern for his health.
