Dear Martians!
Mars Rovers are equipped with DC motors, which enable them to successfully perform the missions in a harsh conditions of the Red Planet. These components are responsible for the steering mechanism, driving the wheels, rock drilling, operating the robotic arm and controlling the cameras.
If one of the motors is damaged, rovers can’t work properly and the player’s task will be to repair broken device. This job will require precision and also it will be good to know some basic details of the DC motors! For example, conventional DC motor and the coreless one are used in Mars Rovers, so let’s learn about three main subassemblies of them: the stator, the rotor and the brush system.
Coreless DC motor components:
- The stator is the main body of the motor that consist of permanent magnet at the centre, the housing, which acts as magnetic return, and the mounting flange.
- The rotor with winding and commutator.
- The brush system with graphite brushes and the electrical motor connections.
Conventional DC motor components:
- The stator with the permanent magnet, the housing and the mounting flange.
- The rotor with winding and iron core that are mounted on the shaft. On this component there is also the commutator.
- The brush system with the electrical motor connections.
DC motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy in a form of rotation. The movement is produced by electromagnetism.
