The expression “Texas-sized” exists for a reason. Throughout the 20th century, the Americans became known for their taste for massive, bombastic things, and the M45 definitely fit the description. Categorized as an assault gun, the idea was very simple: borrow a 105-mm howitzer from the Sherman’s assault variant and mount it on a heavy tank chassis, the precursor to the Pershing. Tough, low-profile and deadly, the M45 was designed for the European theatre, and was by far the most powerful assault gun to be fielded by the American Allies during WWII.
And like many revolutionary projects, M45 arrived too late. It saw most of its service during the Korean war, where it had no unique niche to fill, and so quickly fell into obsolescence. However, in Strategic Mind: Fight for Freedom, things can go very differently for M45.
