Win vs. Lose
With the new continue system that was introduces last week, a lot of decisions were quickly made about the 'gamble' that must be taken when deciding to continue.
Up until now, when choosing to continue, you put your score on the line. While this may be fine for a game like Dark Souls, I don't think it really fits for QuiVr. It's too absolute of a penalty and is not intuitive for new players.
I've changed how the continue-scoring system works to allow a high score to be saved, but in a limited way.
New System
Each time you kill a boss, a 'current-success' score is saved (the difficulty at which you killed the boss). If you decide to continue and then lose, the last 'success' score will be submitted as the high score. This way there is no real penalty for deciding to continue playing. I think that this is ok however, as it gives you a reason to push yourself instead of a reason to decide that you're done playing.
For new players the system is slightly different. If you lose the final gate before you kill a boss (which will be most people on their first few tries), then your current difficulty will be submitted as the high score.
While this will never put someone on the leaderboard, it will show up on their "Best Score" instead of just showing a 0, which is a great way to make someone think there is a bug in the game and decide to play something else...
I don't think that these changes will have any negative effects on the game, and will have some serious positive ones.
I'm interested in hearing feedback on the new system though, and will keep an open mind about any potential issues it might cause.
