Arcade Background Info
A few months ago, we were approached by a Korean Internet Cafe company called Technoblood to see if we were interested in being part of a huge VR push in internet cafe locations in Japan and South Korea. As an early developer in a new content space, we're interested in pursuing almost any opportunity we can, so of course we said yes.
The caveat is that in all of these 7000+ locations, VR will be used without motion controllers (instead using Keyboard and Mouse). Now obviously QuiVr was made from the ground up for use with motion controllers, but games like Luckey's tale have shown that with careful thought controller experiences can be extremely compelling. That understanding, and the fact that 7000+ VR locations is nothing to scoff at, meant that I wanted to give it a shot... bringing us to the present!
Keyboard Controlled Gameplay
Using what seems to work in other controller based games, as well as what I've learned from the spectator mode, the new Keyboard system is very different than traditional QuiVr gameplay.
The game is (by default) played in 3rd person, with your view hovering above the player, and the mouse doing all the aiming. This gives the benefits of VR in a way that makes sense for the control scheme. You can play with others in multiplayer with or without motion controllers, and most features of the main game should work, though this is where I want your help.
Testing
7000 locations can add a huge amount to the QuiVr player-base, and should more multiplayer games. However things still need to be tested more thoroughly than I can manage by myself.
In this beta, you can switch into Keyboard mode by pressing Shift + V This change can only be done in one direction (meaning that you can change into Keyboard mode at any time, but changing back requires a restart or entering/exiting multiplayer). It is also a saved setting, so if you press Shift+V once and come back in, it will start in keyboard mode (Pressing Shift+V while in keyboard mode turns the setting back off, but a reload is required to take effect).
There is a controls UI in the watchtower to help you get accustom to the key mapping, and currently the only missing feature is throwing orbs.
Please give it a try and post bugs/issues in the forums or in the QuiVr Discord, thanks for your continued help and support :)
