FLEET BULLETIN No.3
/// TO ALL RADIO OPERATORS AT SEA \\\\\[/h3]
Sailors and officers,
The Technical Department has been down in the machine spaces again. Turn your volume up: RetroCptn has located his microphone.
THE COMPLAINT
A station is issued a field manual, a set of daily orders, a folder of instructions and a desk. It is not issued a man to stand behind you and say which of them applies at this particular moment.
The result was predictable, and you reported it at length. Halfway through a shift the Cryptographic Officer knows perfectly well what he is doing, and has entirely lost track of what he is doing it for. Which paper goes where. What is to be archived. What is to be returned.
The work was never the difficulty. Keeping your place inside the work was.
THE FINDING
Note that none of this is ignorance. Every fact an operator needs has already been issued to him, in writing, in duplicate.
What no document carried was the one line that actually matters on the day: what is being done, and how much of it is finished.
A man can hold a procedure in his head. He cannot hold his own position inside it.
THE DIRECTIVE: TASK STATUS
Effective immediately, every operator's station carries a task status indicator.
Your MISSION. One line. What this shift is for.
Your TASKS. The steps that mission requires of you, in the order it requires them.
Checked for you. Internal logic reads each task as you work and marks it complete / or failed \\ without being asked. The list updates itself in front of you.
Out of the way until wanted. It sits closed. Hover over it and it opens.
You are not being supervised. You are being reminded.
CLOSING
One question, and High Command means it.
Some of you will not want this at all. There is a case that an operator who is told what comes next is not truly alone down there and that being alone down there is the entire point.
So say so. If enough of you ask, the indicator becomes an option in Settings and the choice is yours: keep the list, or switch it off and run the shift on nothing but the manual, the orders and your own memory.
Comments below. High Command is reading.
