In previous updates we talked about space, encounters and the systems that shape them.
This week we want to focus on the main inhabitant of those spaces: the Shambler.
At first glance, it may look like a single enemy type.
In practice, it behaves more like a framework than a fixed unit.
Not All Shamblers Are Immediately Hostile
Shamblers are built using a behavioral structure. Instead of turning them into simple “attack on sight” enemies, we chose a more layered approach.
Most Shamblers are not permanently aggressive.
They can exist in a neutral state, reacting only when they perceive a threat. A threat can be:
excessive noise
sudden proximity
direct interference
or clear hostile intent
In practical terms, this means that simply approaching one too closely can be enough to trigger aggression. Getting within a few centimeters is often interpreted as a threat.
This is not accidental.
The majority of loot in NO CLEAN START comes from the remains of fallen special forces operatives and scientists scattered across the level. Approaching those bodies often means entering the personal space of a nearby Shambler.
Every decision to loot is therefore a risk assessment.
Controlled Randomness
While most Shamblers follow this reactive model, a small percentage spawn in a permanently aggressive state.
This is not meant to surprise the player unfairly, but to prevent patterns from becoming predictable.
If every Shambler behaved identically, players would quickly optimize their approach. The presence of occasional aggressive variants forces caution without turning the system into chaos.
Encounters remain structured — but never entirely safe.
Physical Variation Matters
Shamblers also vary physically.
There are smaller, medium and larger versions, each with subtle but meaningful differences in:
animation pacing
step cadence
overall speed
silhouette
The variation is not cosmetic. A larger Shambler feels heavier and more deliberate. A smaller one can feel slightly less imposing but more erratic in close quarters.
Some variants develop hardened growths — fleshy, shell-like protrusions around the head.
These armored Shamblers are resistant to headshots.
This directly affects combat dynamics. What would normally be a precise, efficient solution suddenly becomes ineffective. The player has to adapt, reposition or commit more resources.
Melee Is Not the Whole Story
All Shamblers are primarily melee attackers.
However, they are not limited to close-range pressure.
Every Shambler is capable of picking up and throwing environmental objects — stones, bricks, debris. This creates layered pressure even in narrow corridors.
It also reinforces the importance of movement and space awareness. Distance is not automatically safety.
A corridor that feels manageable at first can quickly become dangerous if a Shambler forces you to reposition under pressure.
Why This Matters for the Demo
The goal is not to overwhelm the player with enemy types.
It’s to create meaningful variation inside a controlled structure.
One enemy type.
Multiple behaviors.
Physical diversity.
Context-driven aggression.
This keeps encounters readable while still forcing adaptation.
As we move closer to the demo, the focus is shifting from “can this system work?” to “does it create interesting decisions?”
Next week we’ll take a closer look at how these behaviors interact with group dynamics and spatial constraints.
