In No Clean Start, the building itself doesn’t change between runs.
The layout is always the same: corridors, offices, courtyards, maintenance areas. What changes is how the player can move through that space, and what the environment allows — or prevents — at any given moment.
From the beginning, our goal wasn’t to rely on procedural room generation. Instead, we wanted to design a coherent, believable place that remains tense and unpredictable through its systems, not through random layouts.
A Fixed Layout, Different Decisions
Every run takes place inside the same compound. Rooms are not shuffled, and the geography stays consistent. What changes is the state of the building.
Some doors that were easy to open in a previous run may now require power or a key. Certain routes may look viable at first, only to reveal themselves as dead ends later on. Only one exit is actually open in each run, but the player is free to explore all of them and discover that fact naturally.
The structure remains familiar, but the decisions do not. This lets us control pacing and tension while still making each run feel meaningfully different.
Doors as Decisions
A lot of our work this week focused on doors, and on what it really means for a door to be “openable”.
In No Clean Start, an openable door is not automatically a safe or convenient choice. Some doors take time to open. Some make noise. Others require electricity or specific tools. And some are permanently blocked, forcing the player to read the space rather than simply interact with it.
From a distance, many doors look identical. Only once you commit to opening one do you understand what that decision actually costs you — time, exposure, or risk.
The game never traps the player arbitrarily, but it constantly asks them to weigh their options and commit.
Power and Light as Progression
Electricity plays a central role in how the level evolves during a run. Each major section of the compound is divided into power zones, each controlled by its own maintenance room.
Restoring power doesn’t simply “fix” an area. It changes how the space behaves. Emergency lights may shut down, overhead lights might flicker back to life, and previously locked systems can become accessible. At the same time, restoring power can make the player more visible, or draw attention to their position.
Even then, the environment is never fully stable. Some emergency lights remain active, flickering or pulsing irregularly, hinting at damage and incomplete repairs.
The player rounds a corner and notices three infected — internally referred to as Shamblers — feeding on a body. They are distracted, focused on what they’re doing. Fighting them would be risky, and unnecessary.
Instead, the player can slow down, observe, and carefully move past them without drawing attention. This kind of tension, built around awareness and positioning, is central to the experience we’re aiming for.
