The Sorting Bureau is out
The demo went up in May, everything after it went into the full version. Today it's out, 30% off for the first two weeks.
One morning in the fall of 2025 I told Maria I had a strange idea. I said it carefully, because we had a game in progress at the time and we had already dropped plenty of ideas before that, and I didn't want to be the person who drops another one. It went something like this. Imagine a huge desk covered in things, all sorts of small things, and you put them away in little boxes. Her eyes lit up. She said she'd want to play that, and she'd want to make it.
Then we spent two or three months just thinking, without really starting. Who the clients would be, how to present the sorting, how to make it mean something. At first it was somewhere in Europe, a big round window with a canal outside it, boats, a small cozy town. At some point I suggested moving it all to Tokyo, to the outskirts, and we both liked that much better. Maria came up with the name in a cafe, while we were running through options out loud. The Sorting Bureau. The word bureau pulls in two directions at once, and that felt like the charm of it.
There were no characters in it at first. Somewhere along the way I decided to do them without faces, through their things instead, and I hope that came through. Watanabe and his Japanese stamps, Amélie and her candy, Nagisa and the shells she brings back from the beach. Each one has their own kind of mess on the desk and their own way of writing a note, one anxious, one barely saying a word, one very warm. There's no dialogue in the game and no phone calls, only notes. That was deliberate.
I've thought for a long time that making order out of chaos is what carries you through a rough stretch, that it gets the anxious thoughts out of your head for a little while at least. That's exactly what this game was meant to be about. There's no score, no timer, nothing keeping track of how well you did. There's no music either, just the room and whatever the weather is doing outside the window. And the reward isn't a number. It's a few kind words from the person whose things you just sorted, and the replay, where you watch the desk go from chaos to order one more time.
It was never meant to be a hard puzzle game, nothing here needs cracking. It's closer to one of those paint by numbers kits. You work through it methodically, one small satisfying thing after another, and your head gets to rest while you do it.
Maria is my wife. This is the first released project where she draws and animates. She isn't a trained artist. I think she became one while we were making this, and I'm proud of her.
Not every order is sorting. Some days you lay everything out in neat rows and photograph the desk for the album, some days you put torn and broken things back together piece by piece. Mornings start with a drink that quietly shapes the day, and on day four a cat shows up and stays.
The game doesn't end. We wanted the Bureau to be a place you come back to, not something you finish and uninstall. Clients keep sending their things, so there's always a new desk waiting and a few warm words from them when you're done with it. We've got a lot more planned for it, free content updates included.
PC Gamer wrote about the demo back in May, and the line that stuck with us was "a slow paced mindful experience which is best enjoyed on a rainy day with a cup of tea." That's pretty much what we were going for.
Thank you to everyone who played the demo and wrote to us. The piles, the boxes you can move, a good half of the fixes, all of it is here because somebody took the time to say something was wrong. We'll be around today, patching, something always comes up at launch.
I set the regional prices by hand instead of taking Steam's suggested ones. And we're taking the demo down for a while. It's the May build, and the game is three months past it, so we'd rather people started with the game as it is now. It'll be back once we rebuild it.
