The Island Fights Back. Major Development Update
It has been a few months since the last development update, and a lot has changed. More than 300 changes have gone into Epoch Extinction during that time. The most important result is not the number itself, it is that the game is becoming more systemic. Searching creates noise and danger. Dinosaurs react to the world and to each other. Player movement and combat are more responsive. Structures can be built, damaged, and destroyed. Meanwhile, the island is becoming more overgrown, atmospheric, and believable. Here is a look at the biggest player-facing improvements.
Searching is now a risk
Scavenging is no longer just a progress bar. When searching containers, you can choose how to approach it:
Quick searching gets results faster but creates much more noise.
Slow searching offers a more balanced option.
Stealth searching takes longer but helps avoid unwanted attention.
Dinosaurs can investigate the noise you create, turning a simple search into a decision: do you take your time, or risk attracting something dangerous?
Build defenses, but do not expect them to last forever
Construction has grown into a much more complete part of the survival loop. The player can carry heavy resources, place structures, contribute required materials, and see construction progress in the world.
Current work includes fences, campfires, a power generator, workbenches, a table saw, and the radio tower progression objective. Constructed objects are also persisted as part of the world state.
But a fence is only temporary protection when a large dinosaur decides to come through.
Combat and movement feel more responsive
The player controller and animation system received one of the largest overhauls so far.
Movement now includes smoother starts and stops, sharper direction changes, improved turning, better camera tracking, aiming while strafing, and more natural transitions between idle, walking, and running.
Combat has also expanded with directional dodging, melee combos, improved attack timing, clearer dinosaur attack warnings, stronger hit reactions, updated blood effects, and better weapon animations.
Dinosaurs are becoming part of a living ecosystem
Dinosaurs are no longer focused only on the player. Their behavior continues to expand so they can react to sound, investigate disturbances, navigate around obstacles, attack while moving, and interact with other species.
Large dinosaurs can fight each other, peaceful dinosaurs can graze or flee, predators can pursue targets through the environment, and physical reactions make attacks and deaths feel more grounded.
The dinosaur roster and supporting systems have also received substantial work, including a rebuilt Velociraptor, the Dilophosaurus, Triceratops behavior, pack-behavior foundations, improved sounds, new animations, ragdolls, grounding fixes, and navigation improvements.
Nature is reclaiming the island
The world is receiving a broad environmental pass designed to make abandoned places feel as though nature has been taking them back.
Houses now support multiple levels of age and overgrowth. Vegetation can spread across roofs and walls, while interiors accumulate grime, decay, water damage, and organic growth.

The larger visual pass also includes volumetric fog, improved fog lighting, rebalanced global illumination, more cohesive materials, richer forest floors, improved roads, additional plants and vines, foliage that reacts to the player, and expanded environmental ambience.
Exploration, readability, and performance
A large amount of work has also gone into making the island easier and smoother to explore:
A new tiled minimap and streamed map rendering
Improved world and region streaming
Graphics presets and additional quality settings
Resolution scaling, terrain quality, and grass-density options
Steam Deck-focused performance and stability work
Clearer objectives, interaction prompts, inventory behavior, and radial menus
Many fixes for reloading, doors, collisions, navigation, loot, and demo progression
Much of this work is less dramatic in a screenshot, but it is essential to making the game feel consistent and reliable.
What comes next
Epoch Extinction is still in active development. The focus remains on turning its survival systems, dinosaur behavior, combat, exploration, and world simulation into one cohesive experience. There is still plenty to improve, but the game is much closer to the experience I want it to become: a tense survival game where familiar human spaces have been reclaimed by nature, and where every sound or careless decision can attract something much larger than you. Thank you to everyone following the project and sharing feedback. If Epoch Extinction looks like your kind of survival game, adding it to your wishlist and following the Steam page helps enormously.
