Fog of War
The Fog of War in WEGO WWII: Stalingrad keeps tension high and certainty low. Your intel is never complete, and enemy movements—hidden or misjudged—can upend even the best-laid plans. Units have limited Intel Range and Intel Strength, so smart commanders must scout proactively using Recce units, Air Recon, and assets like radio intercepts.
Unlike in many wargames, Recce units here aren’t just weak infantry—they’re essential tools. With superior recon capabilities and the ability to automatically withdraw from enemy contact (unless ordered to hold), they’re built to survive and report - not be sacrificed. No more losing nimble scouts to plodding foot soldiers.
Fail to scout properly, and you may find your forces walking blind into disaster.
Off-Map Assets
In WEGO WWII: Stalingrad, the action isn’t confined to the map. Off-map assets play a crucial role in shaping the battlefield. You’ll have access to a wide range of support options, including airstrikes, naval bombardments, command support, intelligence operations, and even partisans or special forces units. These assets offer strategic depth without cluttering the map, giving you the flexibility to influence the battle from afar, interdict enemy logistics, protect your forces from enemy air strikes via counter-air, or provide critical reinforcement when your forces need it most.
Game Editor
For those looking to create, WEGO WWII: Stalingrad includes a complete game editor, opening the door to endless customization. Modders can create custom maps, units, scenarios, campaigns, and even AI scripts to bring their own visions of war to life. This extensive toolset not only extends the game’s longevity but allows players to continually evolve and expand the game's content. Whether you're a seasoned modder who wants to create an entirely new scenario, or someone who just wants to tweak a few aspects of gameplay, the editor offers limitless possibilities.
Tactical and Operational Balance
The game’s dual ground scales and time scales strike the perfect balance between operational strategy and tactical combat. On the operational maps, set at a 2.5 km scale, you’ll maneuver large formations and plan broad strategic offensives over the Russian steppes. For the urban combat of Stalingrad, the 500-meter tactical maps provide a more granular focus on street-to-street fighting. With five turns per day on operational maps and two turns per day on tactical maps, the game lets you experience both the grand scale of battle and the chaos of city warfare. This balance ensures you’re never just playing for the next move — you're managing an entire campaign while still engaging in intense, close-quarters combat.
Challenging AI and Multiplayer Options
The AI in WEGO WWII: Stalingrad offers a formidable challenge, particularly for solo players who will face an opponent that is both strategically smart and unpredictable. But the real excitement comes when you go head-to-head with a human opponent. With hotseat and Play By Email (PBEM) multiplayer modes, you can engage in tense, slow-burn battles or rapid-fire confrontations. The WEGO system’s unpredictability ensures that both the AI and human opponents are always engaging, as you’ll never know exactly how your opponent will react, forcing you to think on your feet and adapt your strategy at every turn.
AI Assist
To keep gameplay smooth and focused on big-picture strategy, WEGO WWII: Stalingrad includes powerful AI Assist tools that can handle routine tasks at your command. Speed up your turns and focus on what matters most.
At any point during your turn — or automatically at turn start — you can have the AI:
Assign Ground Attacks
Assign Artillery Strikes
Allocate Air and Ground Support Assets
Plus, you can now move entire organizations with a single order. Just give a destination to one unit, and the rest of its formation will follow — making large-scale maneuvers faster and more intuitive.
