Attention recruits!
We’re taking a look at the music of Appulse, the inspirations and how the music is used to enhance the atmosphere of the game.
How would you describe the music of Appulse?
The OST of Appulse reflects what is happening in game, it is above all electrical and very energic but also evolves to calmer tones when the pace slows down. It can be atmospheric, mysterious, dynamic, profound and aggressive. This is what makes it unique, the variety of styles and tunes you can find in it.
Music really helps to enhance the atmosphere. How did you use the music to fit with the game?
We really wanted to have music that follows the action on screen. In Appulse, there are periods of different pacing, like the calmer score phase and the more dangerous attack phase. The music is dynamic to follow this rhythm, evolving during each attack with more beats and more instruments which intensifies the urgency of the moment. The bosses are of course the climax, each with their own themes and the most intense tunes electronic music can bring.
What were your most important considerations for the soundtrack of the game?
From a purely compositing point of view, the primary goal was to create a musical universe that brings a new dimension to the player experience but also create a score that can be listened to out of the game completely. This is something we tried to achieve, to have a soundtrack so great you want to listen to it everywhere!
What were your inspirations for the music of Appulse?
At first our inspirations came from renowned electronic music artists such as Carpenter Brut, Gesalffestein or Danger to really get that synthwave vibe. But to really create the Appulse mood and fit the OST during gameplay, we look to what other titles handle it, such as the explosive Xenotilt to stay with pinball, but also Ixion for their incredible space atmosphere.
Do you have a favourite piece of music from the game?
For the moment we haven't properly put names on every title so I can't tell you their title precisely, but personally my favourite one is the first one that was created for Appulse, and that is now used in the pool of the main themes during loops. It has such a strong melody that really hyped me when we were creating the first content and trailer for Appulse. It was a while back now!
Our composer said his favourite one was the menu theme, the ones you get when you are aboard the space station. This title strongly creates the build-up for the start of a run. It really is the calm before the storm!
We can't wait to let you listen to the complete soundtrack of Appulse! I am sure a lot of fans of electronic music will appreciate it!
