Hello everyone!
First of all, we’d like to wish you a happy new year! We hope you got through the holidays well and made it into the new year without too many starting difficulties.
Our last update was a few days ago, and a lot has happened since then. Instead of overwhelming you with everything at once, we’ll be sharing upcoming changes and improvements step by step in regular devblogs. So stay tuned!
We’ve already mentioned the topic of today’s blog: starting difficulties.
During the development of Survivor of Egypt, our focus has always been on creating a game with deep mechanics that allow – or even encourage – hours of tinkering and planning. We’ve now reached a point where we’re confident we’ve achieved that goal. That’s exactly why we want to shift our focus to the opposite side of the experience: the first turns and the getting-to-know-the-game phase.
Because we’ve realized that a depth even the Grand Canyon would be jealous of doesn’t help much if it isn’t understandable for everyone.
For this reason, we’ve invested a lot of time into developing a system that explains the game from start to finish, covering all the options available to you as a player. At the same time, it was important to us to preserve your freedom and avoid building a simple “press the glowing button” tutorial.
The most important aspect here is the order in which our features are unlocked. Instead of explaining everything at once, one new feature is now introduced per round. This gives you enough time to get familiar with each mechanic before moving on to the next one.
In the end, we want not only genre veterans to feel at home, but everyone who appreciates a great gameplay experience!
To make sure this remains the case, we also started our first playtests this year. If you’re interested in becoming one of our early testers, feel free to join our Discord server and let us know!
Let’s move on to a sneak peek for the next devblog: After we’ve explained the most important elements of the combat and merchant phases, it’s time for you to return to the HUB and prepare for your next adventure. Here’s a first look at what awaits you there. We’ll go into more detail about the different interaction options - especially the new Well of Souls - in the next blog, so make sure to check back in!

Other than that, we wish you a successful year and look forward to seeing you in the next blog!
