Hi pilots!
The biggest Tryü Sora update so far is live. Thank you all for playing, reviewing and sending feedback. A lot of what's in this update came from you.
What's new
Local 2-player co-op: two pilots on one screen with shared lives. You can revive your partner and chase the separate co-op leaderboards together. Each pilot picks their own unlocked ship, and you can play on two gamepads or on a keyboard plus a gamepad. Press fire to join, left/right to choose a ship, and fire again to ready up. (Desktop only.)
Retro terminal menus: the whole menu system is now a phosphor-green CRT terminal, boot sequence included.
Redesigned ship selection with distinct ship variants based on the original fleet. Each ship now has its own feel: weapon damage, homing strength and wing capacity. The G.O.D. is now a swept-wing interceptor.
Opt-in public leaderboard: submit your high scores straight from the game. Nothing is sent unless you choose to submit. ( https://tryusora-community.deadfly.games/ )
Engine upgrade (Godot 3 -> Godot 4): the game runs on a modern engine now. The gameplay is the same, and your existing progress carries over.
In-game options, so you can change settings without leaving your run.
Fixes and polish: weaker wing pairs now get upgraded when you're at capacity, dragon tail rewards are no longer lost during the hit cooldown, background seams are smoother, music resumes properly when switched back on, and many more small fixes.
Thinking about open source. What do you think?
I'm seriously thinking about open sourcing Tryü Sora and starting a free Community Edition alongside this Steam version.
The idea:
The code would be open source, and anyone could build and play the game for free.
The game assets would be free to share and mod, but not to sell.
Players could send fixes, levels, ships, balance ideas and ports, and the best of it would also come to the Steam version.
The reason is simple: I'd really like as many retro shooter lovers as possible to be able to play this game. Warblade and the other classics meant a lot to many of us, and I'd love to keep that spirit going.
Nothing is decided yet, so I'd love to hear from you in the comments or the discussion forums:
Would you play or contribute to an open source Community Edition?
What would you like to see there: mods, a level editor, new ships, more co-op, other platforms?
Any worries or reasons not to do it?
Any opinion helps, even just "yes, do it" or "nah".
Tell your friends
Know someone who misses the old-school shooters? There's a free demo on the store page, so they can try it before buying. And co-op is more fun with a friend!
If you're enjoying the game, a Steam review helps a small indie dev a lot. Thank you!
See you in the sky! 🚀
