The dungeon is quiet. Almost too quiet.
You carefully make your way through the corridors, watching the enemies patrol their territory. You wait for the right moment to move, trying to stay out of sight. Then you step on a pile of Coins.
Clink.
It may seem like a small sound, but in Don't Wake the Beast, even the smallest noise can change what happens next.
Sound Can Give You Away
Noise is an important part of stealth. Different actions create different amounts of noise and can reach enemies from different distances. Walking normally creates only a very small sound, while opening a chest or a door creates medium noise. Stepping on coins or destroying a fragile decoration is much louder, and some actions - such as using an explosive charge with the grappling hook - can make a very loud sound.
But noise isn't always something you want to avoid. Sometimes, making the right sound is exactly what the dungeon expects from you. Some mechanisms can be triggered by different types of switches, activating or deactivating connected traps and other mechanics. This means that sound isn’t only something to fear - it can also be part of how you interact with the dungeon.
When an enemy hears something nearby, it stops and turns its field of vision towards the source. If the sound comes from somewhere outside its vision, the enemy can move to investigate it. But noise doesn't always have to be a mistake. Destructible decorations can be used as distractions, letting you deliberately draw an enemy's attention away from you.
The Heavier You Are, The Harder It Gets
Sound also becomes more dangerous when you’re carrying a lot of treasure. As your weight increases, so does the noise generated by walking. At higher Weight Levels, even moving through the dungeon can become more noticeable, making it harder to stay undetected. Carrying more treasure also puts a greater strain on your stamina. The heavier your backpack gets, the more stamina you consume, making movement and actions that rely on it more demanding.
And noise isn't the only way to attract attention.
Entering an enemy's field of vision increases the Detection Indicator. It can also rise when an enemy sees you picking up an item or when you collide with them. If you manage to stay out of sight, the partially filled indicator slowly decreases after two seconds. But if it reaches its maximum, an alarm is triggered and the dungeon's Hostility Level increases.
Don't Wake the Beast
And there is one creature for whom noise is especially dangerous.
The Sleeping Beast doesn't react to visual stimuli while it sleeps, but it does react to noise. Sounds fill its Awakening Bar, and once it is full, the Beast checks the place where the last Noise came from. But the Beast isn't the only thing hiding in the Treasury. Screamers are small creatures that wake up when they hear noise and let out a scream of their own. Their scream creates even more noise - usually enough to wake the Sleeping Beast.
So when you're exploring the dungeon, remember to watch where you step, think about what you're carrying, and pay attention to the sounds you make. Sometimes staying hidden means moving slowly. Sometimes it means creating a distraction. And sometimes it simply means knowing when to stay completely quiet.
But maybe, just maybe, you'll find something that makes noise a little more... desirable.
Because in the dungeon, every sound matters.
