The Monchi Desert stretched vast and boundless, like a golden ocean devouring all hope. By day, it was scorched by a relentless sun, with heatwaves shimmering across the dunes. By night, it turned icy cold, its silence profound and oppressive. At the heart of this desolate expanse stood a lone stronghold—Galehold. Like a lighthouse in a sea of sand, it guarded scattered oases and wandering caravans, serving as the final bastion of the kingdom's frontier.
Alan, a young soldier, was one of Galehold’s few defenders. Though still in his early twenties, Alan had spent several years stationed in the desert. His duty was to guard the watchtower, ever alert to the dangers lurking in the shifting sands. From the howling winds of the Monchi Desert, Alan had learned to listen keenly, and under its endless starry skies, he had mastered navigation. Yet, the monotony and isolation of his days often filled his heart with a yearning—a yearning for adventure and escape.
On this particular day, Alan stood atop the watchtower, his gaze sweeping over the undulating dunes. A flicker of movement in the distance caught his eye. He squinted, raising his telescope to focus on the source—a caravan. But something about this caravan was unusual. Its formation was disordered, the camels moved slowly, and many of their saddles were bare. As they drew closer, Alan noticed the fear etched on the travelers' faces as if they were fleeing from something dreadful.
When the caravan finally reached the fort, its leader dismounted hurriedly and rushed to Alan. “Help us! Please, help us!” he cried. “Monsters emerged from the desert. They attacked us, destroyed everything, and they’re still following us!”
“Monsters?” Alan asked, his brows furrowing. The leader, trembling, described the creatures—towering shadows rising from the dunes, their eyes glowing with an eerie light, and claws that tore effortlessly through tents and leather. They seemed otherworldly, not belonging to this land.
Realizing the severity of the situation, Alan swiftly organized the defense of the fort. He rallied the few soldiers stationed there and had the caravan members set decoy fires outside the camp to lure the creatures into prepared traps. As the sun sank beneath the dunes and darkness engulfed the desert, an ominous tension filled the air.
Soon, the monsters appeared. Their massive forms loomed in the night, and the ground trembled under their heavy steps. Alan and the soldiers held their breath, waiting until the creatures stumbled into the hidden sand pits and iron nets. Once trapped, the soldiers unleashed a storm of arrows from the tower, and Alan led a charge with spears to drive the creatures back.
After a grueling night of battle, the monsters were repelled, and silence returned to the desert. At dawn, the caravan, weary but grateful, gathered what little they had left and departed the fort. Alan stood atop Galehold, watching them vanish into the horizon. A sense of pride mingled with unease in his heart—where had these monsters come from? Could the Monchi Desert harbor even greater threats?
Galehold stood firm, and the Monchi Desert, vast and enigmatic, seemed to conceal many more mysteries waiting to be unveiled.
