🤏 Sunday Devlog 24: Nearly There
Welcome back! I really did think I would get controller support ready for a 1.2 public beta by now. Let's discuss what happened!
Controller Menu Navigation Pt.5 billion
Last devlog, I was super excited to have the "majority of the challenges" out of the way for 1.2. Unfortunately, this week I realized that there is, in fact, more work to be done.
The main thing is that the detectable "hitboxes" for the buttons in the controller navigation are objects that are separate from the buttons themselves (for a variety of reasons), and on top of that, the object that "finds" these hitboxes needs to account for moving buttons, overlapping UI, and pieces of the UI on separate planes of existence (game layers).
This can be better illustrated using this gif - notice how the button hitboxes appear and vanish depending on if they're supposed to be detected.

On top of that, there are a bunch of weird edge cases for hitboxes needing to be displayed or not, buttons reading what the hitbox objects tell them in an unintended way (notice how the buttons in the homescreen all bump a little when the options menu is opened) and a couple more headaches.
Thankfully, someone in the Flowlab community by the name of TheBrickccentric, someone who is an absolute wizard with the engine (made a doom-like game and a 3D engine inside a 2D engine), helped me with some of the more tricky parts of getting this all to work. It's thanks to him that I can, albeit with my brain burning, finish the rest of this update "on my own".

Thank you!!!
Adaptive music
ThatBoxLion and Prism4ticTurtle continue to get the adaptive music done for the stage navigation, meanwhile! I can't really embed a playable mp3 into this announcement, but they are roughly 40% done with all of the pieces. We still aren't sure if it'll be done by 1.2, but if not, it will arrive in 1.3, a much less overhaul-y update compared to this one.

You can't hear images, but if it's in BeepBox it's always a banger.
1.2??????
It may sound weird that I'm going to say this, but the 1.2 steam deck/controller beta is coming this week before the weekend! I was planning on having it ready by today, but there was just too much controller nav work to chug through. After that, though, there really isn't much of anything in the way of a 1.2 steam deck/controller public beta.
Thanks for following the devlog as always, and here's to 1.2 being nearly done!
