First video of 2025.
Those of you active on the discord will have seen much of this before, but for everyone else, a major component that I've been working on in the background is a change to the navigation and map system. I remain a little torn, as I like the idea of a fully physicalized map like the one present in the demo. However, such a map has a number of issues, mostly stemming from scaling issues, and visibility issues from lighting artifacts and clutter.
Based on feedback from the fine folks at discord, I will not be eliminating this map or its basic functionality. However, I'm moving most of the complex functions to a new menu. You'll still be able to view the map, and apply long and lat measurements -- but triangulation, plotting, and waypoint systems, along with the upcoming fast travel system, will be accessed from this new screen.
This brings scalability, and significant backend improvements to allow for more dynamic point of interest placements. Through a radial menu you can create any number of plots, with as many waypoints as you like. For example you could create a desired course, and have a second plot tracking your actual position based on triangulation or positional calculations. To add to this, the navigational tools are in the process of gaining some extra functionality. You can mark the current measurement of each tool, which will be referenced on the map so that it's easier for you to remember. Note that it is up to you to determine if those outputs are correct, it simply references the current values.
Triangulation has been overhauled as well. You can place the cursor over the desired reference point, and then the mouse position will determine the reverse angle to indicate direction to the measurement point. You can do this from as many reference points as you like to get more precise positional data.
Panning and zooming are also now supported.
Note that these features are not present in the demo due to some dependencies.
