Hello Shield Maidens and Vikings
While some think of Vikings mostly as explorers and fierce warriors, they were equally skilled seafarers and fishermen, making them masters of the seas and oceans. As a society naturally bonded to the sea, fishing and seafaring were not just practical necessities. They are vital aspects of Viking culture, economy, and identity, as you will find out once you start your journey in the Steineyjar Archipelago.
The advanced shipbuilding techniques, which you eventually also will have access to, allowed them to build boats able to travel vast distances. The longships with their sturdy designs were not only used for raids, but also for peaceful trade.
Fishing was equally important, since in Scandinavia’s unforgiving, harsh climate, it provided a reliable and sustainable food source. Salmon, herring, and cod were among the staples in their diet and could be preserved for the long winters through drying and salting.
Coastal communities like the ones you’ll encounter and build for yourself in Vikings Dynasty depended on fishing for survival. It became embedded in their way of life, up to the point where it could influence beliefs and rituals
The sea also held spiritual significance. A good example for this is the sea serpent Jörmungandr (aka “The Midgard Serpent”), reflecting Vikings’ respect and fear of the ocean. Experiencing the sea as both a provider and a dangerous force, a lot of them carried talismans for protection.
Once you step into the world of Vikings Dynasty and start exploring, you will start to respect the sea as well. We cannot wait to show you!
