Afallon Development Update – Dynamic Lighting, Smarter NPCs & A Living World
Over the past few months, major improvements have been made to Afallon, both under the hood and in how the world feels to play in. Here's what i've been working on:
Reworked Lighting System
The entire lighting system has been overhauled. All light sources in the game now cast dynamic shadows, creating a much more atmospheric world, especially during night and interior exploration. The best part? This comes with zero increase in performance cost. Thanks to significant optimizations, performance has actually improved across the board.
In benchmarks at Aradia's Camp in Coalway Swamp during rain, framerate on the dev machine used to average around 89 FPS. After the optimizations, it now sits around 112 FPS, representing a 20–30% performance increase depending on the area.

Time of Day Matters
Time of day now has real impact on gameplay:
NPCs now respond to the time of day. Human merchants, for example, close their shops and head to bed at night—no more midnight shopping sprees.
New nighttime spawns include shady black market merchants with rare or questionable goods.
Certain haunted areas become active only at night, with ghosts and restless spirits appearing.
Roads grow more dangerous after dark, as bandits, vampires, and other threats roam more freely at night.
This adds a deeper layer of strategy to travel and exploration, you may want to think twice before venturing out after dusk.

Property Ownership & Passive Income
A new property and business ownership system is currently in development and already making good progress. Players will be able to purchase:
Taverns
Sawmills
Weapon shops
And more…
These can be upgraded to provide higher passive income, as well as unlock unique quests, rare crafting materials, and special recipes. Managing your assets will become an important part of your character’s growth in the world.

A World That Changes With You
To make Afallon feel more alive and less static, i am introducing more dynamic, randomized world events, such as:
Meteor strikes
Bandit ambushes on caravans and travelers
Hostile attacks on villages and settlements triggered by nearby enemy camps
Local populations reacting to these threats
These events help ensure that no two playthroughs feel the same and that the world evolves as you interact with it.
More Coming Later This Summer
More information will be revealed later this summer through in-depth videos showcasing and explaining the new systems, world mechanics, and design philosophy behind Afallon. You’ll get a closer look at features like the Fishing system, as well as the newly added Drunk effects, where drinking alcohol gives temporary buffs or debuffs, depending on how far you push it. As your "drunk stacks" increase, your screen becomes blurrier. Drink too much, and you’ll black out and wake up in a random part of the world, potentially far from where you started.
I will also be showcasing new immersive visual details, such as contextual drinking animations where your character visibly drinks the actual item selected, whether it’s a potion, a mug of ale, or a bottle of wine.
Stay tuned, this is only the beginning.
