Step into the shadows of Whispers of the Eyeless and discover how the Tales - your journeys through the city’s haunted districts - have transformed from faint ideas into the dark, unpredictable adventures they are now.
In this article, we’ll guide you through the evolution of Tales, revealing how our vision grew into the mysterious, ever-changing heart of the game.
What Are Tales?
Tales are the moments when you, as the Prophet, choose to descend into one of the city’s enigmatic districts - Old Town, Dungeon, Knowledge, Purity, or Valour. Each Tale is a descent into uncertainty, where every corner hides secrets, dangers, and the promise of power. You may gather followers drawn to your cause, unearth forbidden relics, or be forced into desperate, turn-based battles against foes that haunt each district. The darkness is never the same twice: every Tale offers different maps, events, and blessings - dark boons that twist your fate and alter your abilities. Each journey is a gamble, a step deeper into the unknown.
The Early Visions
In the beginning, Tales were little winding paths on parchment, inspired by the branching routes of games like Slay the Spire. It looked simple and clear, but Aranthor demanded more. Its secrets, its hand-drawn beauty, and its lurking dangers called out to be seen and felt. We knew we had to let the city itself become part of the experience, to draw players deeper into its shadowy embrace.
The Tales We Know Today
Now, the Tales unfold across a map that feels like a bird’s-eye view of the city. As you explore - save for the Dungeon, which looks a tad different - your Prophet moves through the labyrinthine streets, a lone pawn in a city that watches and waits. The paths you choose are shaped by the city’s twisted logic, sometimes forcing your hand, sometimes offering a fleeting glimpse of freedom.
