If you discover the game for the first time, you may get lost with the available information. However the process is pretty simple.

I would also highly recommend to give a priority to defense missions (green ones in the UI) that have as origin an "army base" (AB). You have plenty of equipment available, you are often very close to the main combats, find more easily armored units to cooperate with, and these areas are often more secured than depots or mobile spawns.
