An experimental build for testing French and Simplified Chinese translations has been added to the Beta branch.
These are only partial translations, encompassing the main game interface, the in-game tutorial, and the first four scenes of the game (Mom, Karla, Catherine, and Victoria).
Once you pass these scenes, the game interface will remain in your chosen language, but the character dialogue will revert to English.
The language can be set from the Preferences screen. This is a whole game setting, not a save-specific setting, and it can be changed at any point during a playthrough.
The list of languages is dynamic, allowing it to easily support community-made translations.
How the game dynamically displays text, such as adding the walkthrough hints to the choice menu, breaks how Renpy handles translation substitution.
The choice menu has been rewritten in the new beta build to better accommodate Renpy's translation system. The change has been implemented to preserve backward compatibility, as many players create saves on the choice screens.
Other systems have also been changed, but not every instance of dynamic text has been updated. There will still be screens displaying English or a mix of English and French/Chinese (if you change the language).
The main menu will display a fall-back option to revert to English. This is in case any bugs or other issues prevent a player from accessing the preferences screen.
