Salutations, colonisers!
If you've played Coloniser, you've probably explored a map that looks like this:

This is Summit of Spears, a massive map that supports up to 30 players. It's large, sprawling, and has served us well throughout development. But after spending enough time on it, it can start to feel a little familiar.
If you've been following our development blogs, you probably know that we're working on a map editor. To make that possible, we're first building the underlying rules and systems that will eventually power it. It's been a process of experimentation, iteration, and learning.
When designing maps, we have to consider a lot of factors: elevation, water placement, player spawns, resource distribution, NPC locations, and much more.
Using the tools and knowledge we've gained so far, we've created a new map: River Crossing

River Crossing is a smaller-scale map designed for up to 16 players, at least for now. It is still work in progress.
Its defining feature is a river that cuts through the landscape, with three bridges serving as key chokepoints connecting Side A and Side B. Both sides are mirrored, providing the same opportunities and challenges to everyone who joins the map.
The layout also gives us a chance to observe how players approach resource gathering and progression. Resources are spread across the map, encouraging players to venture beyond their immediate surroundings and take a more proactive approach to expansion.
These conditions should create some interesting interactions. Players may coordinate attacks across multiple bridges, establish temporary alliances to secure contested resources, or fortify critical crossings against larger enemy forces.
At least, that's the theory.
We'll let you be the judge once you get your hands on it.
Playtesters should expect this feature very soon, so be sure to apply for the playtest and invite your friends if you haven't already.
And, as always, wishlist the game and join our Discord for direct communication with us, the developers.
