Hey there, folks!
Welcome back to Monster of the Week, the series where we take one of DDoD's mutants, look at what it is, how it behaves, and how it slowly turned from a rough idea into something you really do not want to meet in the wild.
Parasitic Bees 🐝
Most monsters in DDoD are easy to describe as one creature. The Parasitic Bees are different, though. What you are looking at is a colony that has completely taken over a moose and turned it into a moving nest. That is the important part. This is not a moose with bees around it, as it may look like. It's a scarier thing. This is a bee colony with antlers.
At some point, the host stopped being the main story. The swarm became the real creature. The moose still carries the weight, the horns, and the silhouette. But the infected body now serves a much worse purpose. It provides the colony with protection, mobility, and space to grow.
That is how we ended up with exposed hive structures, swollen infected tissue, insects crawling across the body, and a creature that looks less sick and more fully repurposed. Not ideal for the moose.
A Living Hive
What makes the Parasitic Bees interesting is that the horror comes from the idea that the body is no longer fully its own. The hive growth along the back and sides feels less like an injury and more like construction. The bees are building the room for themselves.
That is also why the infected zones matter so much visually. The open hive chambers, exposed ribs, clustered insects, and hanging saliva all sell the same idea: this animal is still standing, but it is already lost.
The host's size gives the swarm presence. The bees give it activity. Together, they make the creature feel constantly alive in a way that is hard to ignore
So... How Did We End Up Here?
The core idea was surprisingly clear from the start: moose + bees + hive infestation (as always, right?).
But how do you make all of that read clearly as one creature instead of three separate ideas fighting each other?
Step One: Start With the Host
The reference board already gave us the foundation. A moose for the main body and silhouette, large bees for the swarm, and hanging honeycomb forms for the growth pattern and hive shapes.
That combination immediately gave the creature its identity. The moose brings scale, weight, and a shape players can recognize at a glance. The bees bring movement, discomfort, and the sense that this thing is never really alone. The hive references solved another problem: they showed how the infestation could grow into large, readable forms rather than just looking like random wounds. That was important, as we did not want simple damage; we wanted an architecture.
Step Two: Make the Infection Visible
Once we set the base animal, the next step was deciding where the colony had taken hold.
The concept work pushed the infestation into the back and side of the body, creating large exposed areas where the hive growth could sit inside the host rather than just on top of it. That choice did a lot of heavy lifting: it made the creature feel inhabited, but it broke up the moose's clean silhouette. The infected back now works almost like a rooftop hive, giving bees a place to emerge from. The side cavity feels more invasive, like the colony is now living under the skin as well. Much better for monster design.
Step Three: Keep the Moose Readable
One of the best parts of this concept is that the host remains easy to recognize: you still see the long legs, the antlers, the heavy head, and the familiar body shape. Then your eyes land on everything else.
That contrast is what makes the creature work. If the design were pushed too far away from the original animal, it would lose the unsettling effect of recognition. If it stayed too close to a normal moose, the infestation would not feel severe enough. The sweet spot was somewhere in between: recognizable first, disturbing second.
Step Four: From Sketch to 3D
The 3D stage helped lock in the full-body read from different angles.
From the front, the creature still feels imposing because of the antlers and size. From the side, the hive growth becomes much clearer. And from the rear and upper angles, the infected mass across the back reads almost like a second structure growing out of the animal.
This is also where the smaller details start doing real work. The drooping saliva, the exposed internal texture around the ribs, the insects sitting directly on the host. All of that helps sell the idea that this is not a clean mutation, but an ongoing infestation.
Step Five: Let the Swarm Finish the Job
The final color pass pushed the design even further. Dark fur keeps the moose grounded in something natural and familiar. Then the mutated areas light up with sickly organic color, glowing cracks, and exposed hive textures that pull the eye straight toward the infestation.
The bees themselves also matter more than you might expect. Without them, you still have a strong infected moose design. With them, the whole thing becomes noisier and more alive. The swarm turns the creature from a carcass-like mutant into a functioning colony. That is what really completes the idea.
Which Monster Should We Dig Up Next?
That is it for Monster of the Week #4!
The Parasitic Bees may now return to buzzing around their unfortunate host and making the forest significantly less welcoming. If you enjoyed seeing how the concept moved from animal references to infestation design to 3D development, let us know in the comments. More importantly, which DDoD monster should we cover next?
Tell us below. And if there is a part of these posts you want more of, whether that is lore, behavior, concept art, or production process, let us know that too.
See you in the next Monster of the Week.
