Hey there, folks!
Welcome back to Monster of the Week, the series where we take one of DDoD’s mutants, put it under the development microscope, and try to explain exactly how several completely normal animals somehow became... well, this. Last time, we met the Heroncobra.
This week we’re leaving the long legs and venom behind. Instead, we’d like to introduce you to something lower to the ground. Something slower. Something that, for a few seconds, might even make you think: “Oh. That doesn’t look too dangerous.”
Please enjoy those few seconds.
Meet the Frograt 🐸 🐀
The Frograt is approximately the size of a large dog. Its front half resembles an oversized, deeply unpleasant rat: fur, claws, sharp teeth and a head built for biting things that would strongly prefer not to be bitten.
The rear half is much closer to a frog, with enormous folded hind legs capable of launching the entire creature forward. And that combination is important. Because while the Frograt normally isn’t particularly fast, it just doesn’t need to be.
When a Frograt spots its prey, it doesn’t always immediately charge. Sometimes it slowly creeps closer. Sometimes it advances in short bursts. And sometimes it simply waits until the distance between you and it becomes small enough to solve the problem with one enormous jump. Which brings us to the Frograt’s favorite activities: jumping and biting.
Throwing Itself at You
The Frograt’s primary attack is exactly as sophisticated as you’d expect. Once you’re within range, the creature launches its entire body toward you, attacking with its claws and teeth as it lands. And the impact also has a chance to knock you to the ground.
That giant leap isn’t only an attack, either. The Frograt can use its powerful hind legs to rapidly close distance or reposition when necessary. So that slow creature you were carefully keeping ten meters away? Yeah. About that.
Getting Close Was Also a Mistake
Suppose you’ve survived the jump. Congratulations. You’re now standing next to it. :)
The Frograt has several close-range attacks designed specifically for this situation. Its Quick Bite is exactly what the name suggests: a fast melee attack intended to punish anyone lingering nearby.
But the more unpleasant option is its Ferocious Assault. Instead of a single attack, the Frograt unleashes a rapid sequence of savage bites and claw strikes. These attacks can potentially land critical hits, allowing the creature to remove a considerable chunk of health in only a few seconds.
So, to summarize:
It moves slowly.
Until it doesn’t.
Then it jumps on you.
Then it bites you.
Then it keeps biting you.
So... How Did We End Up Here?
The fun part about creatures like the Frograt is that the final monster looks strange, but the ingredients behind it are surprisingly recognizable.
Our reference material started with three very normal animals: a rat, a toad, and — partially — a dog displaying the precise emotional state we wanted players to associate with encountering the creature.
Nothing concerning so far. Then we started combining them.
Step One: How Does a Frog-Rat Actually Stand?
One of the first problems wasn’t its teeth. It wasn’t its face. It wasn’t even deciding how disgusting it should look.
It was simply: How does this thing exist on four limbs?
The early concept work explored several different body positions.
Some versions kept the Frograt very low to the ground, with its massive rear legs folded tightly underneath its body. Others pushed it higher, placing more weight on the front limbs and making the frog-like anatomy much more obvious.
The challenge was finding a posture that could support two opposite ideas at once: the creature should look heavy and awkward while resting, but also look completely believable when those enormous back legs suddenly launch it forward. Unfortunately for the player, we figured it out.
Step Two: From Sketch to 3D
Once the general proportions and anatomy were established, the Frograt moved into 3D.
This stage was where the strange silhouette finally had to work from every possible angle: the huge rear legs, the hunched torso, the relatively narrow forelimbs, the rat-like face and, of course, the mouth.
The sculpt also allowed the team to test how the monster would look in its resting position, when crawling forward, and when preparing for the movements its combat design required.
Step Three: Making It Feel Like It Belongs in the Swamp
The final visual direction moved away from the clean shapes of the early concepts and toward something much dirtier. Literally. Its upper body is covered in muddy brown fur, while its frog-like rear half transitions into darker, mottled skin.
The texture work helps break up the creature’s silhouette against swamp terrain and ties the two very different halves together.
The design also calls for an eerie appearance with sharp fangs, long clawed limbs and glowing red eyes, because apparently the frog-rat the size of a German Shepherd still wasn’t communicating enough hostility.
From above, the hybrid anatomy becomes even clearer. Rat. Rat. Rat. And then suddenly: frog.
Which Monster Should We Dig Up Next?
That’s it for Monster of the Week #2!
The Frograt has officially survived our extremely rigorous scientific examination and may now return to jumping on people in the swamp. If you enjoyed seeing how one of our creatures goes from real-world references to anatomy sketches to sculpting, and eventually into the monster you meet in DDoD, let us know in the comments.
More importantly: Which DDoD monster should we cover next? Tell us below — we’re curious which creature you’d like us to dissect... creatively speaking.
See you in the next Monster of the Week.
