Hello everyone.
We want to share an important update about Mushroots.
On 10 July, Mushroots will leave Early Access, enter full release, and become free to play.
We are announcing this in advance so everyone clearly understands what is changing. Until that date, the game will remain paid on Steam. If you are thinking about buying Mushroots during this final period before the transition, please keep in mind that the game will become free very soon.
First of all, thank you.
Thank you to everyone who bought Mushroots, played it, gave feedback, reported bugs, left a review, or simply gave this strange little mushroom war a chance. It genuinely means a lot to us.
When we started working on Mushroots, we wanted to create an unusual strategy game. Not a classic RTS focused on fast unit control and constant micromanagement, but something more uncommon.
We still believe there is something strong in that idea. Some players really understood the gameplay and enjoyed the unusual approach to strategy, and we are very grateful for that.
At the same time, we need to be honest about the reality of the project.
Mushroots did not reach the audience size we had hoped for. For any game, that is difficult. For a multiplayer strategy game built around matchmaking and an active player base, it is especially important. Without enough active players, matchmaking suffers, balance becomes harder to support, and the game cannot fully become what it was designed to be.
Looking back, we also made mistakes with scope and complexity. Mushroots was probably too ambitious for our current team size and experience, especially because so much of the game depended on having a stable online community.
Because of this, after the full release and free-to-play transition, Mushroots will most likely not receive major updates unless the game manages to find a serious active player base.
We may still make smaller fixes or adjustments, and if the free-to-play release brings a stable community to the game, we may consider targeted improvements or smaller updates. But we do not want to promise a long roadmap, a return to full active development, or major new content updates at this stage.
We believe it is better to be direct than to keep making promises we are not sure we can realistically support.
To thank the players who supported Mushroots before it became free, all existing owners will receive the Supporter DLC for free.
The Supporter DLC is cosmetic only and does not provide any gameplay advantages. At release, it will include two exclusive avatars. If Mushroots manages to build a larger active audience after going free, we plan to add more small rewards to it over time.
Before release, we are also working on some changes and improvements to make the game more accessible and leave Mushroots in a better state. We cannot promise a huge wave of new content, but we do want this transition to feel proper, clear, and fair to both new players and early supporters.
This is not us disappearing.
Mushroots became a real project with real players, real feedback, and ideas that we still care about. It taught us a lot. Even if it did not grow into the larger multiplayer project we once imagined, the experience we gained from it will stay with us.
We still want to make games and try new things.
For now, we hope that making Mushroots free will let more people try it, understand what we were going for, and maybe give the game one more proper chance.
Thank you for being part of Mushroots.
