In the third Arcane Knowledge mini-series entry, we explored developer Dead Mage’s roots and what the studio's earlier game Children of Morta taught the team about storytelling. For our fourth and final entry in this mini-series, let’s talk a little more about how…
Story matters
As is evident from the studio’s previous work, Dead Mage clearly takes storytelling seriously. The rogue-lite genre presents both distinct challenges and opportunities, and the team is hard at work implementing a narrative approach that leverages its strengths—and doubles-down on what makes Wizard of Legend unique.
“We’ve gone all-in on the world of Lanova,” says game director Aryan Bina. “Fans of the original will recognize some old faces,” such as the shadowy purveyor of cursed relics, Nox, “and we’re introducing many more who we hope that they’ll love just as much.”
Wizard of Legend 2 weaves a tale from an earlier era of Lanova, centered around a cast of characters who each have different reasons for being at Van Eyckrous mansion. Head mage Hieronymus wants to discover someone worthy of becoming the next Wizard of Legend. The powerful sorcerer Serjik can’t resist the siren’s song of a good challenge. Madam Moulin, Nazradin, and Aletheia each have their own tales to discover.
“In the spirit of the game’s fast pace, these characters will be the primary vehicles for storytelling—they’ll move the plot along and give you insights about the world as you play, and when you talk to them in the hub. This being a rogue-lite game that you can play for many hours, you should expect lots of story in here, as well as some unexpected twists.”
As for what awaits those who seek to become a legend, the wizards of Lanova will have to find out for themselves...
Following up the original Wizard of Legend is a charge that Dead Mage doesn’t take lightly. The game was a certified hit, with a community of passionate players across multiple platforms—and Dead Mage is committed to honoring that for the sequel.
“We’re all huge fans of the original Wizard of Legend,” says Bina. “For us, success means staying true to what made it great, and giving fans more of that. Feedback from the community is a huge help for us in achieving this.”
