Hello, my name is Thomas, and this is my story.
Literally…because I’m one of the team’s narrative designers. I guess more accurately it’s our story but whatever. I’m here to talk a little about a couple of my favorite narrative elements in Cygnus Enterprises!
*minor spoilers ahead*
Daniel
When I joined the team Daniel was a bit of a blank canvas. All we knew is that he was a merchant, but I wanted him to be more than that. An interesting idea for his identity came to me while I was half-asleep in a taxi. That idea came from a few places:
- Livestreamers and social media personalities I follow
- Stories online about sleazy NFT people doing rug-pull scams
- Copious amounts of Dark Souls. (More specifically thinking about my old pal Patches)
I figured he should be obscenely wealthy, dialed into online culture, and frustratingly popular. I also thought it’d be really fun to design a character who is always telling half-truths to the player. Thus, the Mediarite Mega Mogul was born.
The Livestream
Daniel’s Livestream was one of the most entertaining missions for me to have a hand in creating. I wasted much of my life on the internet so being able to capture the collective brain rot of a chatroom makes it feel worth it. I absolutely love the emojis! Zihui from our GUI team did such an amazing job capturing the universe of Cygnus Enterprises through this super-cute art. An added bonus is that we get to use them in our work chats! The livestream chat was an interesting experiment that really paid off. We want to play more with elements like this in the future and hope you look forward to seeing what we cook up next.
Voiceover
My favorite stage in the entire development process was directing the voiceover! Hearing the words that I'd been staring at on a spreadsheet for so long come to life was an experience I’ll never forget.
Working with such a talented, enthusiastic group of voice actors as well as a supportive and wonderful studio was such a joy. We were even fortunate enough to snag the voice talents of internet funny guy Gianni Matragrano, who made me laugh throughout the entirety of our remote recording session.
I could type forever about this but ultimately: reading is for nerds. So please feel free to check out my video interview with some of the lovely voice actors!
Thank you so much for your interest in Cygnus Enterprises. I am beyond thankful that we have an opportunity to share our hard work with players around the world. I hope you look forward to experiencing the game’s growth alongside us in the new year.
