Kingdom Come Deliverance: The story so far
Released in 2018, the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance thrust players into the life of Henry of Skalitz, a medieval blacksmith’s apprentice turned vengeful adventurer. With the long-anticipated sequel almost upon us, what do newcomers need to know about the groundbreaking gameplay of this unique RPG series?
Meet Henry of Skalitz
Henry’s original tale is a deeply personal one, set against the struggles of a medieval Bohemia’s grander nobility. His tranquil life - as a humble blacksmith’s apprentice - is dramatically upended when his parents are murdered during an assault waged by one of the warring lords of the land.
Having narrowly fled the massacre himself, Henry’s journey towards retribution sees him crossing paths with villagers, bandits and the nobility alike, as he battles to retrieve the sword crafted by his father for presentation on that fateful day - now a symbolic tool of retribution.
A stunning medieval world
The stage for each game in the series is 15th Century Bohemia, the region now known in the modern era as the Czech Republic. Within this historically-accurate rendition of medieval Europe, players are free to explore quiet villages and bustling towns alike, each one separated by the hills, forests and fields of Bohemia’s natural countryside.
Along with Henry’s core quest for revenge, your exploration of this world exposes you to a diverse cast of characters facing their own trials and tribulations. How you choose to help (or hinder) this population plays out in a nonlinear fashion, granting you the freedom to impact the world your way, whether in brushes with bandits or during the grander clashes of the main storyline.
Discover your story, your way
Every choice you make in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance universe has a consequence when it comes to your relationships with Bohemia’s inhabitants. Whether presenting yourself to the humblest of townsfolk or the more influential nobility, how you interact with the population and conduct yourself - even how you manage your appearance - affects your fortunes as the world passes its own judgements against you.
Just like Henry, the people of Bohemia have their own wants and needs, with a daily routine you’re free to interfere with - for good or for ill. Get pinched committing a crime and you’ll likely be reported, attracting the unwelcome attention of the authorities. Commit enthusiastically to a criminal reign of terror, and rest assured the world will respond to your actions.
Enjoy true mastery of immersive RPG mechanics
Uniquely in both games, mastery of Bohemia’s many activities is earned through practice and persistence, rather than a mere crude allocation of skill points. This is a world that affords you the freedom to pursue your adventures as a warrior, a thief or a persuasive speaker - even a hybrid that suits your own unique playstyle - if you’re prepared to truly master your craft.
There’s a satisfying logic behind the tactile combat, for example, where deflecting an opponent’s directional blow demands an appropriately targeted counter of your own. It’s time - and true mastery - that provides this adventure with its deepest rewards, whether you wish to wield a new weapon or maintain your hard-won equipment.
Warhorse Studios has built on the first game’s unique, immersive foundations to craft a sequel that expands on Henry’s tale in both narrative scope and world-building. In a Bohemia now twice its original size - and with an epic tale to match that ambition - Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is set to continue the studio’s revolutionary approach to immersive RPG gameplay.
