If you’ve played the demo of Gaucho and the Grassland, you might have noticed something different: even though it’s a farming game, there’s no money involved when it comes to getting items. But why is that?
The setting of the game is inspired by a time that feels long gone — over 100 years ago. But the real reason behind the absence of currency goes deeper. The game’s economy is based on bartering: direct exchange between people, rooted in what each person has and what they need.
This form of trade — one of the oldest in human history — still happens naturally in remote areas far from urban centers. And since the world of Gaucho and the Grassland takes place in an isolated region, deeply connected to nature and local traditions, bartering felt like the perfect choice to bring more authenticity to the experience.
In the game, you’ll meet locals and professionals who offer trades for specific resources — and don’t be surprised if they ask for deeply regional items, like tangerines, watermelons, or even pine nuts. Plus, through these interactions, you can also learn new recipes and ways to craft your own items.
Here, value lies in the exchange. And every encounter has the potential to shape your journey.
