We've gotten a lot of feedback asking what our plans for Superfly are in the future. Here's what we're going to do!
Short term – 2 weeks
These are the features we want to focus on in the near future. They’re all currently in-progress. While there might be some delays if things turn out harder than expected, these features are all pretty locked-in, so you can feel confident that they’ll be here soon.
Halloween update
We’re releasing a special game update for halloween! One unique and limited-time feature: the halloween update includes a Dark Mode, where everything turns spooky, including the player’s health! No more invincibility, if you take too much damage in Dark Mode, you die!
Combat missions
We’re adding combat missions to Superfly to go alongside the racing missions. In the combat missions, you’ll have to destroy waves of enemies as fast as you can! Just like the racing missions, your time will be recorded and uploaded to a global leaderboard so you can compete against other players.
New enemy type
More enemies = more fun! This new enemy is a mini-boss type that’s more than twice the size of any other enemies in the game right now. It’ll be in the combat missions, so make sure you play those to face off against it! It’ll also spawn normally around the city, especially in parks.
Updated leaderboards
The current in-game leaderboard UI could use some work, it was rushed a bit to be ready in time for the racing missions. We’re updating both the graphics and usability. This feature might be released a bit later than the others, it’s very much a work in progress.
Medium term – 2 months
These features are longer-term. We’ve started working on some of them, but it’ll be awhile until they’re ready. Since there’s a lot more time available here, we’ll be adding more and more features to this list based on your feedback for what you want to see in the game. However, there’s also the chance that we’ll have to cut some of these features because of technical limitations that would make them too difficult to add to the game.
City graphics update
A whole new look to the city environment! Now that Superfly has sold a few copies, we’ve been able to buy new art packs that will make the world look better than ever before. We’re also working on updates to the generation code that will make different areas of the city look more distinct from each other. In particular, we’ve already started updating parks and planning out different districts with the city.
Collectible powerups
This idea is from player feedback! Several of you said you wanted to see collectibles in the game, and many people were interested in optional powerups that changed gameplay for a time. These powerups could make the movement modes stronger, or they could spawn giant enemies around the world! We’re still planning out the details, let us know what you think.
Even more enemy types
Fighting the drones is a fun part of Superfly, and it’ll be even more fun with more diversity in enemy types. We’re looking into adding even more enemies, and adding more diversity to the enemies that already exist.
More movement modes
Another idea from player feedback! A lot of people wanted to see new movement modes in the game. We’re currently designing new movement modes. Sorry, no details available yet, we’ll say more in a future update.
Long term – 6 months
The features are very long-term future plans. Since the features below are all very technically difficult to add to games, we can’t promise that we’ll be able to add them. They might work out or they might not. If we do have to cancel any of the features below, that means that we’ll be spending more time on improving other parts of the game instead.
Multiplayer
Facing off against your friends in the city, either working together to destroy drones, or facing off in competitive movement or combat challenges. Adding multiplayer will require massive changes to our server infrastructure and the game’s code, so it will take a long time to implement right.
Story Mode
Detailed storylines are a ton of fun, especially in a VR superhero game where you can grow in skill as you play through the missions. However, detailed storylines are a ton of work, requiring a ton of attention to detail and work to create even a single mission or level. If missions stay popular and people want more story content, we’ll start to dedicate more time here.
Destructible terrain
Being able to destroy buildings or sidewalks with movement modes! This would be an amazing feature to add, but implementing it without ruining performance is extremely difficult. If this is added, it might be limited to only a small number of objects, not the entire world.
Interactive pedestrians
What’s a city without people? It only makes sense if there are civilians walking down the streets in a city this dense. However, adding pedestrians means creating animations for every possible interaction, which is very difficult in a game as open-ended as Superfly. The pedestrian AI might also be a bit strange at first (anyone remember the old car AI?), but they’ll improve over time.
And More!
We released Superfly as Early Access so that we could get feedback from real players of the game, and so that we could use your ideas to guide our development. Let us know what other long-term features you’d like to see!
