Monster Tarot cards are one of the core elements of Frail Hearts: Versicorae Domlion.
According to Fiore, the main creator of the game, cards were born as an idea of merchandize for the Kickstarter campaign. The Sezhes team was inspired not only by the classic Tarot deck and its Major Arcana cards, but also by such an anime show like Card Captor Sakura.

Instead of using classical illustration, the developers chose to collaborate with their friend and artist Davide Schileo (aka Tabulae - Medieval Woodcut & Printmaking ) and turn the game’s original creatures, also inspired by mythical horror and religious figures, into something more mystical and allegorical. The style of Davide is related a lot with the metal music genre, and the developers wanted to give an extra sense of gore and mature content to them… a perfect mix for the intended kind of horror and audience. Since every card is related to a short poem (found in-game by talking to the masks, in the Altar of Sacrifice), the Sezhes team also focused on a more symbolic way of representing them, rather than making a copy of actual bosses.

First, Davide drew manually every monster, then the developers “trapped” them into cards, as Alexis would do. Sezhes also printed them in a limited edition deck, which works as real Tarot cards.
Of course, as they say, any creator plays favorites. Fiore’s cards are XIX. Gabriel and XXI. Lailah.
