Fiore, the head of the game company Sezhes, and Erika, the main composer and the guitarist of the band Undreamed, met for the first time in their shared hometown Bronzolo in Southtyrol (Northern Italy). The encounter took place during an art gallery exhibition, where both of them had some paintings exposed. Erika told Fiore about her musical journey with Undreamed and later on Fiore contacted Erika with the proposal of working together on the videogame Frail Hearts.
Erika had recently finished her studies in film music in Rome and was happy to put her new knowledge into practice together with her band Undreamed (Erika & Harald). Fiore convinced Undreamed about his project with the exciting storyline, interesting characters and overall dark mood. Fiore and Undreamed had some meetings where they talked about the direction the soundtrack should take and which kind of music and mood would fit the main characters and different situations (battles, dungeons, action, danger, etc.). Undreamed decided to introduce the violin as the main instrument next to the classical guitar and the percussion/drums. So, Undreamed invited a guest violinist to record parts of the score.
The first scores were written for the main characters: Alexis, Cathrine, Anne, Arthur, Michael. These are very different characters: Alexis is partly malicious, partly melancholic, Cathrine has a religious theme, Anne is gruff and serious, Arthur is adventurous with a touch of melancholy, and Michael is lonely, sad and shady. Undreamed tried to convey these different characters through the musical language.
For every musical theme of the characters Undreamed has made a research in music history and traditions. The theme of Cathrine, for example, derives from an ancient Gregorian Church Chant (Dies irae - Day of Wrath), which is ideal to represent her pious but strong character and the impending doom of what is going to happen to her.
Erika wrote parts of the score on sheet music, using mainly the classical guitar. Then she recorded the parts in her home studio and programmed all the orchestral scores directly in the music software (Cubase). Afterwards Harald added all the percussion/drum parts, and the guest violinist recorded her parts. Mixing and mastering was also done in the home studio by Erika. The Main parts of the score have been written and recorded during the lockdown period (spring 2020).
